Irene's Story
After high school, I had to go straight to work for at least a year. After that, time at college was split with time at work. I had been going to school part time since then, changing study fields and degree plans that added up to stacks of hours. I did it all on my off days from the fire station when I can, and finished an Associates in Fire Sciences for the job.
I finally graduated in 2007 with a B.S. E.T. in Structural Engineering! I also earned a second degree in 2008 in Safety and Fire Protection and Engineerin...Expand for more
g. It won't be long before I start an internship. Someday I'll get my P.E. and be able to certify building plans for construction, perhaps for my own company.
Workplace
By far, the best decision I made was following my father into the Houston Fire Department. I joined in Fall of 1993, and I love, love, love my job. I feel privileged to actually get paid for something I love doing. Seriously, how many people say that going to work is awsome? I promoted to Chauffeur in 2001, to Inspector in 2003, and Captain in 2007.
