Iris's Story

Life You can email me at iris.cox (at) gmail.com. I would love to hear from you. I am married to a wonderful guy, Benjamin Cox, who I met at Brandeis University. We married in July 1999, after graduation. We have three adorable sons, Avi (5 1/2), Sam (4), and Rafael (1)--hopefully I will have a girl some day. I graduated from law school in 2002 and graduate school, with an M.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, in 2004, both from universities in Oregon. We own a house in Portland, with a gorgeous view over a forested valley and mountain range, where we lived for 5 years until 2004 (the house is currently rented out). We own other real estate as well, in Portland, OR, and in London. We currently live in a suburb of Tel Aviv, Israel. I work in the Tel Aviv patent law firm of Reinhold Cohn & Partners, as an associate in the Biotechnology patents group. My husband has an MBA, and is the president and CEO of an iron ore company in development. School I actually very much prefer my post-school days, although I can't say high school was all bad. I am afraid I don't really have any interesting stories from high school (at least ones that I would write here). It's fund to reminisce, though. I enjoyed biology and chemistry in school, and that continued on into my unversity, grad school and professional life. Mr. E was great! I loved the "Little Green Man," and it was such a shame when the original "man" was stolen (a few of you might know what I mean). I used to play on the basketball and softball teams. I have gotten a chance to play in a lawyers' softball league (in Portland, OR, where we own our US house) once in a while over the last few years. I also just started playing Netball, which is vaguely similar to basketball, with some South African, UK and Australian expat women in Israel. I have unfortunately lost touch with most of my friends from that time, but I have a wonderful, rich life now, and some good friends. College I went to Brandeis University, where I met Benjamin in January 1997, a few months after starting freshman year. We decided in M...Expand for more
arch to get married, though we officially were engaged a year later. I majored in biology, he in economics and medieval history, with a minor in business. We graduated in 1999, then got married on July 25, the same year, and moved to Portland, OR, where he comes from. I went directly to law school that fall, and Benjamin started and finished an MBA (and most of a PhD in finance). I worked for a year in a small corporation as a licensing and contracts lawyer, but then went to graduate school and got a M.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I use my background now in my field of patent law. It was my goal to go into patent law since the second year of college. Workplace I am a US patent attorney (Oregon State Bar) and "trainee" in Israel Patent Law. I hope to pass the second half of the Israeli patent bar exam this summer, and become a patent attorney in Israel as well. I work at Reinhold Cohn and Partners, in Tel Aviv, which is the largest patent law firm in Israel (30 patent attorneys and at least 15 other professionals, in addition to our associated IP law firm, which includes many attorneys), and the second oldest in Israel (est. in 1934 by Dr. Reinhold Cohn). I am part of the life sciences group, and more specifically in the biotechnology sub-group. My practice focuses on writing and prosecuting patents for both Israeli and US/European/foreign clients around the world, in fields of pharma, medical devices, biochemistry, molecular biology, etc. My husband and I have decided that we intend to be here for another year, allowing me to have the additional time in one firm and our kids to have more time learning the language, and then return to Portland, OR in the summer of 2008, where I hope to find a job in my field at that time. I couldn't have asked for a better life than I have now. I have a wonderful family, have a really enjoyable job and career, and we are financially comfortable. I couldn't have imagined it in high school. At my age, I would have expected at the time to be single, no kids, working as a doctor (which I am glad didn't happen).
