Irma's Story

Following graduation, I attended MEI for grade 13, then spent 2 years in Bible School(Behtany in Hepburn, Sask. and Clearbrook). It was then time to pursue my lifelong goal - to become a nurse. I started UBC Nursing School in fall '67 and graduated in '71 with my nursing degree. My first job took me to Vanderhoof, BC - a wonderful opporunity to experience diverse nursing situations. I returned to Chilliwack, where I worked at the Chilliwack General Hospital for 4 years, during which time my son Tim was born. I then worked in a community nursing job to avoid having to work night shifts, as I was a single parent. By this time I was ready to find my white knight, so when I met Bob Moen, a farmer from Sexsmith, Alberta in 1978, it was love, almost at first sight. We were married in 1979 and I moved to the farm.. A year and a half later, our son Ryan was born, a brother for Tim. Life on the farm was wonderful, and I met a whole new kind of people. But nursing was still my passion, so when Ryan was almost ready to go to school, I took a nursing refresher course and went back to work casually, having to drive 50 miles to the QE11 Hospital in Grande Prairie. I enjoyed my work even more the second time around, and Bob was free during the winter, at least, to look after the boys when I was gone. The boys had a wonderful time growing up on the farm, often hiking over the riverbanks(we lived on the riverbank), quading, ski-doing, x-country skiing. We also drove to the mountains to ski. Life on the farm was idyllic, but in...Expand for more
volved lots of driving to get anywhere. Ten years ago I moved to a small town, Spirit River (40 miles from the farm) in order to work at the smaller hospital here. We sold the home quarter 8 years ago and bought a house in SR; now I'm working a .6 parttime position and still enjoying the job for the most part. Bob is retired so keeps the yard maintained. I'm quite active in our local church, playing the piano and helping out in the music ministry; also involved in prayer ministry. Our sons are both married and we have a grandson, Josh, and a granddaughter, Sara. We come out to the coast every year, usually in June, although I try to fly out to Abbotsford to see my mom at the Menno Hospital several times a year. I value the trip mom and I took to Israel in 1995; that was a highlight of my life - an experience I'd like to repeat soon. I also travelled to Peru this last winter to see a friend; Macchu Picchu was an unforgettable experience. Unfortunately, Bob doesn't like to fly so our trips together are limited to road trips(no waiting around in airports, at least). In closing, I'd like to say I value the years spent at MEI. The interest the instructors took to develop our characters and souls was not always appreciated at the time but I'm absolutely sure that this interest contributed to my present spiritual passion. I love God and His Son, Jesus; He is my Life and gives me hope; without Him my life would be meaningless and hopeless. I thank Him every day for His grace and mercy and it is for Him that I now live.
