Irving's Story
Since leaving Goshen, NY, I served 10 years, 3 months, and 15 days in the US Air Force at Minot AFB, ND. I completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education with meajors in Psychology, Sociology, Social Science, History and English from Minot State University in 1987. While in Minot ND, I also served as a Pentecostal minister for a small rural church and an associate pastor in a church in Minot, ND. However, I eventually left the church after some unfortunate events concerning disagreements with the senior pastor.
I then taught English for 20 years at Andress HS in El Paso, Texas. Upon completing my Masters in Teaching Degree from Grand Canyon University in 2007, I served as the High School English Language Arts/Reading Facilitator at the district level in the El Paso ISD, the seventh largest district in the State of Texas, for six years. I was responsible for 17 high school English/Reading departments with the largest school with an enrollment of over 4,000 students. I had to work with curriculum, assessment, and training 350+ teachers. My last year, I was sponsored by ACT to give a presentation at the Assessment Conference in Austin, Texas to over 500 superintendent, principals, and teachers throughout the state.
While in El Paso, I was with my partner Antonio Rangel Ponce for 16 years until he passed from COPD in January 2012. I retired from the El Paso ISD in June 2013. I am now living in Tool, Texas with my current partner Dr. Jack P. Busby. We live in a beautiful home that Jack has designed with Frank Lloyd Wright's chief delineator, John How. Wright and is situated I. Cedar Creek Lake. We have a 1.5 acre woodland backyard, consisting of flowers, shrubs, trees, with walking paths. Since Jack is a Master Gardener, I have been learning the art of gardening from him. Since I love classical music and good church hymns, Jack plays the grand piano for me nearly every day. We both enjoy collecting Asian Antiques and going antique shopping.
It should be noted that when I moved from El Paso to Tool, Texas, I brought along with me a cat (Simba), a chiqhuahua (Tashi), a Nain Terrier (Natasha) and a toy poodle (Nina). I also had a 4.5 foot iguana (Lily) that died prior to my move. Since moving, Simba and Tashi has passed away. Simba at 18 years from natural causes and Tashi at 13 years from chronic heart disease in August 2014. Nina passed away at 13 years from chronic heart disease in August 2017. Natasha passed away at 15 years in April 2018. She lost her sight and hearing, developed dementia, and lost her cognitive abilities.
On September 17, 2016 Reverend Dr. Jack P. Busby and I were married in our woodland garden by our beloved pastor Reverend Dr. Ron Salfren. Our daughters, Bryn and Kristen, and the six grandchildren (Matthew, Emily, Lauren, Mikey, Natalie, and Bella) were present to share in our joy. Jack's daughters refer to me as their second Dad and the grandchildren called me Grandpa. Life is sweet.
Overall, retirement has been great.I planned on retiring before I was 60 and did so at 59. Jack and I have celebrated our two year anniversary in June and looking forward to many years together enjoying life to its fullest.
