Janice's Story

In 1980 I moved from Chicago to the Los Angeles area with my soon to be husband, a Neurologist from Northwestern University. Five years later we divorced. I decided to put my energies into a career and not to sublimate my personality or vicariously live through my spouse's accomplishment. In 1988 I married my late-husband of 29 years and we lived in Venice and then moved two miles away to the West Los Angeles area. This is where we raised our two sons. Our Mar Vista community is unique in West Los Angeles, People know their neighbors, they walk their dogs and stroll their babies. It is really a neighborhood with sidewalks and a local park. The location is also fabulous because we are only about ten minutes from the Santa Monica, Venice and Marina Del Rey (now known as Silicon Beach) and only five to ten minutes from Beverly Hills and UCLA. A great place to live with no fires, no mudslides and only the occasional earthquake! I was recently widowed but decided to stay in our home surrounded by my two sons, the best friends on the planet, and everything that is lovely and familiar! Love those Pacific Breezes! Love those Amber Maples on our cul-de-sac that are deciduous and give me a memory of the Mid-West as they go through the four seasons. I also love my Palm Trees! I have been in the Hard Money Equity Lending industry most of the 35 years that I have been licensed. I worked for the two major Lenders at that time and eventually left the industry after the big Northridge Earthquake to become a co-founder of SCI Real Estate Investments which became one of the largest 1031 Real Estate Based Exchange companies in the U.S. Like everyone else 2008 was a killer. I have so many loyal lenders and investors that I decided to downsize and work from home funding for a developer. So far, we h...Expand for more
ave had a 12 year great business relationship. I am my own boss, make my own hours and have time to enjoy life! I have always been interested in ART and DINOSAURS! I am on the Japanese Art Acquisition Group at LACMA (our Art Institute) and I am a Fellows at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles (our Field Museum). The Curator of Vertebrae Paleontology called me in 2008 and asked if I would mind if a newly discovered Dinosaur Genus could be named after my family! Yes, Hollanda was a DinoBird discovery by Japanese Paleontologist in Mongolia who called world famous Dr. Chiappe in Los Angeles, who called me. Life was never this simple in West Chicago! Just kidding! Being a older mom, (37 & 39) I became involved in everyone of my son's schools! I have been on the PTA, Room Mom, Board, or Executive Board of these neighborhood and private schools. After my youngest left New Roads School and about five years later, I decided that it was time to cut this cord and stop going to school. I was a stranger at WCCHS in 1965 having graduated from a small school in Carol Stream. I was the only one from that school who headed West. I spent most of the time from 67-69 with friends from Glen Bard West. I am sadden to say that I really did not get to know many of my classmates. Like many will admit this was a difficult time of life. I only returned once to West Chicago and that was to bury my Mother in 2015. I drove through town and realized how I missed this lovely town.. I am a believer in the saying, "How old would you be, if you did not know how old you were"? Like many of you, somehow we have gotten older but we carry fond memories that will keep us young forever. This is my story! I have been blessed. Those years in Illinois made me the person that I am today and I am thankful.
