Jack Burgess:

CLASS OF 1970
Fairfax, VA

Jack's Story

I finally got around to joining up after getting the emails for years. I am still in Fairfax forty years later. After graduating from American University I attended law school at Catholic University and have practiced law in Virginia and D.C. for thirty years, with a main office in Fairfax City. My firm's practice emphasizes insurance litigation and I handle personal injury, wrongful death, medical and legal malpractice, workers' compensation and related matters. I am married to Terry since 1980 and we have three daughters, Sarah, Katherine and Caroline, all now in their twenties and single. Sarah graduated from University of the Arts in Philadelphia (vocal jazz and piano) and is now in the management program with Great American Restaurants (think Sweetwater, Coastal Flats, etc.). Katherine graduated from Saint Mary's Honors College in Maryland (political science) last month and is waiting tables and looking for a "real job," but considering graduate school. Caroline is taking art classes at NOVA and working at a Whole Foods store. All are at home with us in Clifton and that is OK as our home is way too big for two and impossible to sell these days. We have been into boating and water sports for many years. Terry and I have been scuba divers for decades. A...Expand for more
ll of the girls were certified at age twelve and we have been to many beautiful places to dive and explore as a family. We owned a live aboard charter vessel in the Virgin Islands from 2004 - 2009 and traveled all over the Caribbean during those years when others weren't chartering our catamaran named Advokat. We have been building a larger vessel in China for the last three years and had a wonderful trip there a little over a year ago to see the project under construction. While touring China we visited many wonderful places and while in Shangri-La (remember the novel "Lost Horizon" by James Hilton) selected that as the name for our new trawler which was delivered in May 2010 to Annapolis, Maryland. We are now busy commissioning Shangri-La, addiing all of the navigation and audio visual equipment and creature comforts that will make her a capable world cruiser. As we take more time for ourselves (Terry is my office manager) and work a bit less, we plan to cruise frequently, enjoying the Chesapeake Bay and New England this year and far away destinations in the future. I sure look forward to seeing many old friends at the upcoming class reunion. I stay in touch with some folks. but a 40th reunion will certainly produce some faces that I have missed since 1970.
