Jack's Story
Life:
Raised in Temple City in southern CA, my family moved to Red River County Texas in 1959 where I began 8th grade at the Dimple Unified School a very rural K-12 school. We then moved to the “big” town of Paris, TX where I finished 8th grade and attended Paris High School for my freshman year, 1960-61. We then returned to CA, this time to the north state area where I graduated from Roseville High School, in Roseville, CA in 1964.
I worked for Safeway and Raley's Supermarkets as a clerk while I worked my way through 5 years of college, first graduating with an AA degree in the winter of 1966 from Sierra College in Rocklin, CA where I served as Editor-In-Chief of the college newspaper and yearbook and as a member of Student Government. Moving on to Sacramento State University I earned my BA degree in Government/Journalism in the Spring 1969 and then worked on a teaching credential until the following year chosing however not to pursue a teaching career. While at Sac State I become a life-long member of Sigma Phi Epsilon national fraternity and was Editor-In-Chief of the college yearbook in 1969 and in 1970 and I was very active in school spirit activities.
I began my financial services career with Pacific Life in December 1968, In the spring 1980 I graduated from American College, PA - studying a financial planning curriculum and went on to pass the national exams for certification as a Certified Financial Planner, CFP® certificant and became an Investment Advisor Representative for Princor Financial Services, Inc, Des Moines, IA as well as a Senior Financial Advisor for Principal Financial Group® in 1980. My practice remained at the Principal until my retirement in 2014.
My favorite teachers in high school? The ones that gave me the most personal, confidence, knowledge and wisdom before I left Roseville High, are Mr. Ernie Titus and Mr. Jack Pelletier both English teachers, Mrs. Marjorie Lieser my typing teacher and Ms. Noel Ring, my Journalism instructor. I am sure they all would be amazed to hear this. My favorite coaches from Roseville were: Mr. George Goto, Mr. Fred Besana, Mr. Carl Foote and Mr. Barney Ransome, and from Paris High School (Paris, Texas that is), Mr. Bill Redell. Each of these gentlemen had so much confidence in me that it actually rubbed off onto me and helped me pursue and obtain my college diploma while almost everyone else (including my high school advisor) along the way told me I could never accomplish that. My favorite college professors at Sierra College were Mr. Donald Muir, Coach George Goto, Dr. John Creelman, Ms. Alison Hare and everyones favorite Dr. Robert Corbett. At Sac State it was Dr. Gary Wilhelm, Dr. Howard Dorman, Dr. Lee Thompson and the most important to me was my college math professor in my senior year whose name I cannot remember (I am very sorry to say), because without his personal help I would have never passed the required college math course for teacher candidates in order to graduate. I waited to take it until my senior year, (dumb decision) and by then I forgot what little ma...Expand for more
th I learned in high school. Little did I know later I would be in a math based career.
A few things most people did not know about me while in high school was that I had access to the keys to every door and lock at the school in my junior and senior years, and I was the go-to-guy in my senior year to buy beer as I seldom got asked for ID anywhere! Also, I really did not like driving my 1952 4-door Buick, (dubbed the party car).
In 1969 I married my college sweetheart, Kris Swanson, got two great sons, John and Kevin, our marriage ended in 1977. In 1980 I married Kathy Adams from San Jose, my life sweetheart, got two more great sons, Kyle and Brian. We lived in Fair Oaks from 1980 to 2016 with my wife Kathy and our children. Finally, with no more children at home, my oldest son is 49 and my youngest son is 30 with two others age 44 and 35 resepectively. None of them live locally anymore. I also have three grandchildren that live near us now in Austin, TX with my oldest son John and his wife Teresa. My son John works for Cisco Systems. My # 2 son Kevin resides in Southern, CA and he is a independent film maker and editor. My # 3 son Kyle and his wife Rachel after graduating from Sac State 10 years ago now live in New York City, they own their own business Ford Media Lab, Inc. My # 4 son Brian is in Information Services and lives and works in San Francisco, CA.
I began my career in the financial services industry while still an undergraduate at Sacramento State in late 1968. I owned my own financial services practice from 1968-2017 and have been listed in Who's Who for the Financial Services Industry and have earned the honor of being recognized by an International financial services professional association as one of the top 4% in my profession worldwide for 35 years of those years. I also achieved a very rare career milestone in April of 2010 when the Principal Financial Group inducted me into the company's Advisor Hall of Fame in 2010. Less than one tenth of 1% of all their representatives have earned this career capstone over Principal's 140 year history; I am now privileged to be among them.
I still enjoy my favorite college teams, Sacramento State University, Hornets Men's Basketball, and Soccer teams. I am a life member of the Sac State Alumni Association, and I am involved with the Stinger Athletic Association. I was privlidged to be the first ever non-player to be inducted in the the Hornet Men's Basketball Hall of Fame in a ceremony that bestowed the "Center Court" award to yours truly in October 2010. This was such an awesome event for me. I have truely enjoyed helping this program for the past 40!
My wife Kathy enjoyed a career as a very accomplished Realtor® in Northern CA. Kathy and I both enjoy our retirement now living in a golf community outside Austin, TX. We love Texas and our new local travel venues on the gulf.
Military:
Finally, I spent a short time of my life in Company C, 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry Division of the Army National Guard in the early 70's from which I was honorably discharged.
