Heaven Is A Journey
Looking back to that Winter Day; used to be a daily pain filled process...Now 44 years later it's just the beginning chapter to an amazing spiritual sojourn. But...I will never forget the sound I heard from my parents room after my mother picked up the ringing phone that fateful Saturday morning. It was February 14th 1970…Valentines Day…a day reserved for the theme of Love; would never again remind me of anything else but that phone call and the scream and cacophony of sounds that followed like those of a wounded animal. nt automobile driver. I wouldn’t find out till many years later from Alan the sequence of events that day before he and Greg left for the short drive out through the country to the school where the basketball games were being held that day. Whether Alan suppressed them or they just surfaced 30 years later he shamefully broke down and said that they had gone up to the bakery in town that my family used to own and bought he and Greg donuts and chocolate milk and then made their way out a country road that he had not been that familiar with and as he took a drink of the chocolate milk a hairpin ninety degree curve was in front of him when the sip of milk was over. They hit a large oak tree head on at thirty miles an hour and neither had seat belts on. After the impact Alan only remembers looking at Greg slumped back in the seat and making a low moaning sound. Alan who was developed from years of football had broken the steering wheel. Although he kept it from crushing him, he still had a broken sternum and a severed jugular vein which was bleeding profusely. Vicariously recalling this moment, I have to stop and take deep breaths to go on.
