John's Story

Sorry to mislead everyone but I never was known by my given name of John so it made sense to enroll here as Jack and yes, I knew the other Jack Riley. While I'm confessing, I never made to Annapolis High. I went to 9th in junior high then transferred to Charlotte Hall Military Academy in Southern Maryland. Put in 2 years there then went in the Air Force. I spent the first 17 years of my life in Woodland Beach and I remember everyone from there. I was in trouble most of the time though I didn't make it to MTS as did some of my friends. I was the oldest son and that made me a great punching bag for my father, may he burn in hell. I also had a problem with authority especially with morons like Laycock in junior high. On the bright side I remember teachers like Kennedy, Liberty, and especially Miss Harper. I played the coronet there and went on to the marching band at CHMA. The Air Force Band tried twice to recruit me when I first joined. My response was " I can play a horn but I can't fix a radio" and I went on to be an aircraft radio repairman. I spent 7 years in the Air Farce and managed to make A/2c (E-3) twice. Did 2 tours in Japan including some TDY in Nam and Korea. Obviously my character hadn't changed. Back then rank was based mostly on seniority and I resented someone with less knowledge than I telling me what to do. Got tosse...Expand for more
d out after 7 years and returned to Woodland Beach in "66. Climbed into the bottle and got in trouble again so I moved to upstate NY. Moved to Seattle in '98 and here I is. Throw in a couple of marriages, divorces, 5 kids, 11 grandkids, 2 great grand kids, 2 more 2 year visits to Japan as a civilian and the story gets out of hand, as if it wasn't already. I've only got 18300 characters left. I guess I should have dated the above. Anyway today is April 20, 2013. I'm living across the Sound and nearly in sight of Seattle. Catching the ferry every time to get there is a pita and not cheap. Compared to the East Coast the weather here sucks. Very mild winters but very wet summers as well. Stand still very long and turn green. I don't miss the snow and minus 35 degree weather we had in NY for 30 years but I sure wish we had more sunshine. Speaking of sunshine, it's rare enough here that when we get 15 or 20 minutes of it, it's called a sun-break. I spent last winter building an 18 ft. flat bottomed skiff of my own design. Primarily a sailboat but capable of utilizing an outboard. I'm looking forward to fishing, crabbing and clamming soon. They have a very large clam here called a geo-duck that averages 2 - 4 lbs. and it sells in the markets for $30/lb. Most of the legal areas to dig them can only be accessed by boat so I'm good to go.
