Jack's Story
MY STORY
Do you remember me? I dont feel that I was an outstanding person when I lived in Washington, D. C. I did make a very short tryout to join the high school baseball team. I participated in the high school Junior ROTC program. I was not a socialite person. (I did not attend high school social functions) I was just a friend.
However, in my college and post college years, I have been very fortunate to meet so many different people who have different nationalities & personalities and have come from different parts of the globe. Many of them I have met in the churches that I have attended. I have enjoyed listening to them sharing with me their life experiences!
One of the most common question people from other countries will ask me is; âÂÂWhat country are you from? It is apparent that my physical being cannot definitely identify the country that I belong.
MY HERITAGE.......... I have been taught since I was a boy to call my self an African American or Negro. However, my family heritage is not limited to Africa. My heritage also includes the country of England (English) and the Native American Indian (Croatan, Chickasaw). Also, I have recently found through family history research that my great great grandparent slaves, who were the ones who chose to add their slave ownerâÂÂs last name to their name when freed, were owned by a slave owner whose name was George Washington Frey [German heritage]. The German name Frey (pronounced FRY) meant free and was a common name taken by free people, those who owned no indenture or loyalty to the aristocratic class.
George Washington Freys wife, Sarah (Bidwell) Frey and my great great mother Mary (Bidwell) Frey were half sisters. Charles Bidwell (English heritage) was the father of both Mary and Sarah. Mary's mother was an African house slave named...Expand for more
Ermin. We were told by a family elder that Mary was a white looking person and my great great grand parents James & Mary (Bidwell) Frey did not want to leave their slave owner during the emancipation! I am sure that my ancestors were related to by George and Sarah Frey as family, rather than just slaves!
MY LIFE has had its ups and downs. It is so wonderful to have a relationship with God! I have experienced His love throughout my life!
I requested His help through prayer when I failed because of poor grades while attending the University of Maryland and asked not to return. I was blessed to be able to improve my GPA at Luther Rice College (a Baptist College) in Alexandria, Va. and continue my education at the Michigan Technological University, in Houghton, Michigan. I graduated with an Associate in Applied Science Degree (Electrical Engineering). I attribute His influence at General Motors for their interest to contact me and offer me a job prior to my graduation. In the year 2003, I was able to retire from GM. (GM made me an offer to retire.)
God has blessed me with a wonderful wife, whose name is Sharon (Bolla) Frey, to share my life with! I met her through a Christian Fellowship in Lansing, Michigan. She has a Hungarian, English, French, and German heritage. More blessings have come to us through the birth of our two daughters. Our daughters, while teenagers were described to me, by a lady at a church that my family and I were attending in Bristol, Virginia, as two amazing daughters! Both of our daughters have made missionary trips, Katie to Cambodia and Jessica to Africa. Both of them have now graduated from college. Katie is a teacher and Jessica is an engineer.
The aim of my life is a continuing growth in the ability to receive and to give love!
1 John 4:16 NIV
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God Is love.
Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.
