Jack Wepler:

CLASS OF 1968
Port clinton, OH

Jack's Story

Well, it's about time that I let everyone know what I have been doing for the past 50 years! After graduation, I worked another year with my Dad, Art, at Paul's Gulf Plaza (was at Maple and Perry but now has a beautiful condo complex there) and joined the USAF in July, 1969. After basic training, I elected to enter the field of radiologic technology and served at Scott AFB, Illinois for two years, received my ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) in 1971 and finished my tour of duty at Westover AFB, Massachusetts and left the AF in February 1973. I moved back to my parents digs (they now lived in Oak Harbor) and worked as a rad tech at Riverside Hospital in Toledo. Riverside was closed several years ago due to the consolidation of several hospital groups. I then decided to move away from Ohio and pursue my career in St. Louis in July of 1976. I went on board at St. Louis University Hospital and was promoted to a middle management position in six months. This is where I met my first wife, Jane and we were married in December, 1978. In 1981, I was afforded the opportunity to work for a private radiology group and managed a free-standing radiology center in St. Louis until 1989 when I decided to further advance my career and move to an assistant manager's job at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton, Illinois. Our son, Jeremy, was born in October, 1986 and I needed to keep moving "up the ladder" to support the family, I was moved to the Manager of Medical Imaging Services at Alton Memorial in 1992 and oversaw several mergers with the final one being in 1993 with the "birth" of BJC Healthcare. Sadly to say, Jane passed away unexpectedly in September, 2003 due to a cardiac event, leaving my son and me with heavy hearts. But, due to a strong family and work base, we picked up the pieces, put them back together and ran like hell! After two years and becoming better acquaited with a co-worker at AMH, I married my current wife, Barb, in November. 2005. I need to say this; I have been one of the most blessed individuals knowing that I have loved and been "loved back" by two of the most fantastic ladies!! I was with AMH until August, 2008 when there was a "structural reorganization" and I, along with seven other middle managers, was displaced from my position after nearly 20 years of service. After that, I took the first managerial job I could find and took a plunge and Barb and I moved to the UP of Michigan in January, 2009 where I went to work for Grandview Health System in Ironwood, Michigan. Ironwood is the farthest west community in Michigan and 20 miles south of Lake Superior. Winter there is challenging! We even bought a home with the intention of retiring there. Well, my position was displaced at Grandview in August, 2009 and we put the house in a rental agency's hands and we moved back to Alton and spent six months living with Barb' s parents. Barb's father passed away right after we arrived back. We feel that this was a "divine intervention" since we were able to help Barb's mom adjust to a widow's life. After job searching. and waiting for the "right" position to come along, Barb and I moved to Corsicana, Texas in May, 2010 where I took a job at Navarro Regional Hospital as a Director of Imaging for Community Health System. Barb took a job with the Corsicana School District and retired in 2014. We then decided it was time for me to bow out of the main work force and I retired in May, 2016. We took a "hiatus" back in Alton for three months and then moved to our current location in Pittsburgh in August, 2016. Why Pittsburgh?? Retirement benefits, no tax on groceries or clothing, free public transportation for "older Pennsylvanians" (we sold both of our cars and ride the busses and light rail and ren...Expand for more
t a car for "out of town" trips), and super sport's and cultural venues. We live in a high rise right downtown and are five walking minutes from all major theaters, 2 blocks from PPG Paints Arena (Penguins' home), and a three stop ride away on the light rail (the "T") from PNC Park (Pirates) and Heinz Field (Steelers). There you have it: condensed and precise as I can recall!!!!! 5/11/2018: Barb and I are anticipating the upcoming 50th. reunion and hope to see as many classmates as possible during the weekend we are in P.C.! 2/25/2019: Well, it's off to another great year! Took a part time seasonal job at our local Kohl's over the past holidays from mid October through the weekend after Christmas. It was truly a remarkable experience, especially working the floor on Black Friday! Great time with great asociates. Next month, it's time to retrieve the travel trailer from winter storage and begin a series of trips this spring, summer and fall. Along with participating in church choir, council and helping with the hospitality committee, in late May we will be shuffling off to St. Louis, Corsicana, Texas, see friends in Colorado and then visit Wisconsin for our grandson's third birthday. We will most likely be in Port Clinton in mid July for a family reunion and then our fall journey will take us to Williamsburg, Va. and to North Carolina to see my sis. Hope all are well from the class of 68 and we may see some of you on our jaunts! 9/18/2019: I can't believe it has been a year since the 50th. reunion. Barb and I have been really busy with church activities and TRAVELING!!!! So far this year, we have been coasting around with our travel trailer to Wisconsin, Macinaw City, St. Louis, Memphis, Fort Worth, Louisville, Cleveland (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!), Toledo (with a trip through PC) and Detroit to Greenfield Village, Just got back from a quick trip to Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown, We have one more jaunt starting this Friday going back through Wisconsin, St. Louis and Louisville. And, we are hoping to receive our upgraded RV (2 feet longer with one slide out) in October so we can take a short local trip before putting the unit into winter storage in November Next summer, we are seriously contemplating full time RVing for two years to fully see areas of this beautiful country while we are still physically and mentally able. God bless you all and may peace be with you! UPDATE 5/21/2020 Well, we are finally following through on our dream plans for the past year and 1/2. We are placing our furniture and other apartment belongings in temporary storage, moving out of our digs here in Pittsburgh and officially hitting the road as fulltime RVers for the next several years. We leave for Wisconsin on 6/5/2020 via Louisville, Kentucky and will be at the Dells for a week visiting our grandson on his 4th. b-day. Then, we are heading up to northern Minnesota to visit the headwaters of the Mississippi. From there we go to Sioux Falls, S.D where we will finalize our "domain" residence registrations (only states which do fulltime RV registrations are Florida, Texas and S.D). Then we are free wheeling to the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, and then up into Montana to explore. After that, we are headed down into Colorado to visit some really good friends and will finally migrate down into Arizona for the winter months. Going forward from there is remaining to be strategized and planned. Eventually, after we have this new way of life out of our systems, we will be headed back to Pittsburgh to "re-retire" probably in about 2-3 years. May God bless each and everyone of you for continued health and keeping a positive outlook during this most challenging time in our country. PLEASE VOTE IN NOVEMBER. Our lives depend on it!
