Jackie's Story

After high school, I went to Howard Payne University where I met my husband, Jan Howard. We married in June of 63 and as he was in Med school at the time, I did my senior year at University of Houston, graduating from Howard Payne in the summer of 64. I taught school (PE) in Texas City for 4 years. My first child was born in Austin in 67 while Jan was doing his internship there at Breckenridge Hospital. He served 2 years in the Navy so we spent one year in San Diego, and then I came back to Dallas while he spent a year in Vietnam. We lived most of the next 40 years in Dallas in the same house. We had a boy in 67 and another girl in 75. Jan practiced there for 22 years until he was diagnosed with a brain tumor in April of 92. I went back to teaching school when my oldest daughter started college. For several years I taught Physical Ed, but spent the last 8 years teaching 3 to 6 year olds in Special Education until my retirement. I really enjoyed the younger kids while I waited for more of my own grandchildren. Jan and I enjoyed traveling a lot. We got to see all the states except Alaska during his lifetime. He even took a trip with my youngest daughter and me after her graduation from high school in June of 1994 to Chicago to an aunts house there showing our daughter the museums etc. that her siblings had seen before her birth. God was good to us giving us more than 2 years with him after his surgery and diagnosis. He died in July of that year. We also got to see the Philippines, the Bahamas, and parts of Mexico during Jan's lifetime. After Jan's death and both of our parents and my sister that year, I took a trip to Israel with a group of people from Baruch Hasheem, a church of Christian Jews in Dallas. The trip had a special meaning for me after the losses. The people in that group brought a special meaning to the places in Israel and Jordan. I even rode a ...Expand for more
camel. Since that time my traveling has mainly had to do with family, especially grandchildren. A couple of years after Jan's death, I adopted a young lady from Russia. This involved a trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg. Julia has just presented me with my 5th grandchild in Philadelphis (a chance for another trip) Her little girl is beautiful having a mixture of African, Russian Caucasian, and Russian Turkish in her. She fits well into our family which includes a Mexican daughter in law and German son in law. One of my grandchildren was born in Germany and is very bilingual in English and German. Two are bilingual in Spanish and English and Im sure my new grandaughter will be bilingual in Russian and English. I, however have only learned a few words in Russian and German, so must have an interpreter when speaking to my children's inlaws. My Spanish does come in handy with my son's inlaws. I am now spending most of my time in New Braunfels, Tx. with my daughter and her family. They are really enjoying the German atmosphere here. The grandson is enjoying being a part of the German Children's choir. When I am back in Dallas, I get to go to Iglesia Vaquera in Red Oak where my son pastors. I still need some interpretation there since Spanish has to be spoken very slowly for me to understand. I am still enjoying some traveling, reading, helping sometimes with my grandson's school, and visiting with my 4 children who are in 4 different cities. At least they are all in the states now. My 6th grandchild will be born in Midland Tx. this year to my one child who married an English speaking young man. They are even Aggies so I don't think you can get much more Texan than this. I do enjoy Texas and the many things it has to see. We have spent much of our lives mixing with people of different cultures and learning about their cultures, but I do always enjoy coming home to Texas.
