Jackie's Story
Life
I have had a very interesting and exciting life since I left Santa Clara. Scott DeVenny and I were voted most versitle in our Senior year and I had no idea then how appropriate that would be!
I went to San Jose State and worked with George Costa's San Jose Light Opera Company and got the role of Annie in "Annie Get Your Gun." In the summer I participated in a summer stock program and got to be in the chorus of "Hello, Dolly" with Carol Channing at the Curren Theatre in San Francisco.
I got married in 1970, to a dream of a guy, Bob Wenzel, took up residence in San Jose and worked for World Savings. We then moved to Belmont where I interned at Franciscan Forge Interior Design Studio as an interior designer. I was A.S.I.D. certified and got to work with some very interesting and famous clients--Jennifer Montana, M C Hammer (YUK-I was part of his bankruptsy and did not get a dime), Carol Burnett (her home on Oahu) and Cher! I left Franciscan Forge and went on my own as--Jacqueline Wenzel Interiors--! I did a lot of work in Hawai...Expand for more
i! I had a ball!
In the meantime, I had four kids--Liz, 27, Robbie,deceased, Jenny, 19 and John, 18.
We are now living in Clayton and loving it!
I sold my design business in 1994 and started assisting in a Special Day Class at Concord High School. I saw how tough it was to get these special kids the services they needed to have a free and appropriate education and formed a nonprofit organization called "Advocates 4 Special Kids." I have been the Executive Director for 9 years. Advocates is now nationwide with 27 affiliates. I am the webmaster for our web site--who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks-- and editor of our quarterly newsletter. In my spare time I advocate at Individual Education Plans meetings with parents who have special needs kids.
I am now 62 and feel like my life is just beginning. I love to travel and do a lot of speaking at conferences around the country on behalf of disabled children's rights.
I have retired from Advocates and part time work for H & R Block! Go figure!
