Jacqueline's Story

Life Hello, I am a bit mortified at how fast time flies. Before writing this I realized its been 24 years since I graduated from OCHS (1984). Really quite frightening actually. Who was I back in high school? Well, a nobody really. But if you had to place me I used to work on The Billows with Mr. Bonner. And I was an avid OCHS Boys Basketball fan and regularly kept the stats at home games and traveled with the team and Coach Boyd to all the away games. I loved basketball (still do but don't see it nearly enough)! I've been forced to become a Dutch soccer fan. Rather than write about history...I guess its best to focus on the here and now...I am writing to introduce myself and my family to you. My name is Jacqueline van Marle (aka Jackie Biddle) and my husband’s name is Jan van Marle. My husband and I have been married 8 years and have 3 beautiful sons – Alex (7), Noah (7), and Matthew (4). We live just outside The Hague in a suburb/town called Rijswijk. Jan is Dutch. We met on vacation over 9 years ago and decided together to live in Holland (aka The Netherlands). Jan is one of seven children and many of his brothers and sisters live in The Hague. I am a marketing consultant at The Hague University. I really like my work but its quite the challenge doing what you love in a second language! I was formerly the Director of Marketing and Communications at two well-known MBA programs here in The Netherlands. First, the Rotterdam School of Management (Erasmus University) and later Nyenrode University (based in a real castle!). The best part about my current job is the commute. Dutch traffic is notoriously bad and I used to commute to Nyenrode 1 ½ hours. Now I feel truly Dutch ...Expand for more
-- biking the kids to school and then myself to work. Jan is a teacher in The Hague. We are raising the children to be bilingual. I speak English to the boys while Jan speaks Dutch. We live in the Old Center of Rijswijk. The church in the center dates back to the 13th century. Within a short 5 minute walk, a brick pedestrian shopping area with all kinds of stores like a butcher, grocery, gift and card shops, etc… Every Wednesday in the summer there is an antique market and every Saturday year round there is a market with flowers, fruit & vegetables, cheese, bread, etc… It’s really very nice. We are literally steps away from The Hague. The Hague often figures in the world news. It is the political capital of The Netherlands and residence of the royal family. The International Criminal Court, the Peace Palace, the War Crimes Tribunal and Europol are just a few of the organizations that contribute to The Hague’s reputation as the international city of peace and justice. There is something for everyone in The Hague. I was surprised at the historic architecture. The Hague is on the coast so often we go to the beach even in the winter to take walks with the children and Beau. It reminds me of Ocean City sometimes. I've read of comparisons between the beach area of The Hague (Scheveningen) and Atlantic City in its old glory days. There is also a great deal of theatre and art museums -- Mondrian and Vermeer are famous Dutch artists from this area. The Hague is a great place to live, I must say I prefer it to any other city in The Netherlands. So if you ever come to The Netherlands you can visit Amsterdam but stay in The Hague! :-) Well, I hope to hear from old acquaintances.
