Jacqui's Story

Hi Classmates, It's been so long since our graduation. It's a pleasure to see so many names that I remember. I hope that the years have been fruitful for you and your families. I'm a proud mother of 3 'grown' children and the grandmother of 4 youngsters. I'm still creative and presently working on some children's stories. My favorite hobby is writing, poems, songs, stories & plays. Most of my inspiration is given to me spiritually. I've written many gospel songs. To relax, I make jewelry and marketable crafts. Professionally, I'm a former educator and presently involved nationally with women's health care. I've had the opportunity to travel and live Africa, Canada and all over the states. Although I haven't lived in the NYC area in over 30 years, I'm still a 'NY' gal and love fashionable attire. Campus life was fun! It helped me to be a more well-rounded and independent person. I was fortunate to be able to to attend several colleges & universities. On graduation day from Jamaica High in 1967, I immediately went to Cheyney State College, in Chester, PA for the pre-college program. The dorms were brand new and modern. I had a great roommate from Philly. It was a fabulous experience that every high school graduate should have. Next, I received a scholarship and attended Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas ( 1/68-5/68). The Amsterdam News did a brief story on me entitled, "Deep in the Heart of Texas". I plan to write about my 5 exciting and reflective months in Texas. I was there when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. In 1969, I got accepted to Fisk University in Nashville, TN. I received an academic scholarship and graduated in 1973 with a BA in Economics/Business. I took other courses at Vanderbilt University, TN, Georgetown University, DC, The Foreign Service Institute, Wash, DC, The New School in NYC, and graduate classes in Emory University's MPH Program in Atlanta, GA. I had more of an 'independent' personality at school. I, therefore, never joined a sorority, but I had friends fro...Expand for more
m all of them, who are still close to me today. The weirdest job that I ever had was my first job after school, working at 178th St. and Hillside Ave. over the train station. Sharon & I were left all alone in an office to sell magazine subscriptions. Both of our names were 'Mary', as we read our scripts. You can imagine how much work 'didn't' get done, but we had a ball. She and I first met on the Q2 bus to Jamaica High. We were both new to Queens, we bonded and have been best friends ever since. I've been trying to locate another High School friend, Linda Hutchinson, an art major from the class of '67 or '68. I think that her daughter is an actress. I'm also trying to locate Patricia Warmsley. If anyone remembers either of them and knows how to contact them please let me know. I've received many plaques of appreciation from my work & voluntary service over the years. My most valued award is a collectors, water color painting of Nelson Mandela, that he signed. The Board of Education gave it to me for my work and my students presentations, art work and poetic contribution to 'Mandela Day' in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Another item that I greatly appreciate is a photo of me between Coretta Scott King and Christine Farris King [Martin's sister], as they gave me a certificate and gift for my voluntary service. What would I do differently? Wow! Save more money and 'step out' creatively at an earlier age. In fact, I encourage young people to fervently pursue their dreams and don't let anyone discourage them. One of my fondest childhood memories is of my Nana, dancing and singing with Lloyd Price on the radio to his song, 'Personality'. She'd turn around, while shaking head & shoulders, with a big smile on her face as I danced with her. My most recent revelation is that even in my 50's, I still have a very youthful heart and though I've been successful in many of my endeavors, I consider myself 'a late bloomer'. There's still much more I want to do. I look forward to hearing from you. Jacqueline 'Williams' Lewis
