One of Jake's favorite quotes is:""One hundred years from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, how big my house was, or what kind of car I drove. But the world may be a little better, because I was important in the life of a child." Dear Lord - Help me to be a good sport in this game of life. I don’t ask for an easy place in the line-up. Put me anywhere you need me. I only ask that I can give you 100‰ of everything I have. If all the hard drives seem to come my way, I thank you for the compliment. Help me remember that you never send a player more trouble than he can handle. And help me, Lord, to accept the bad breaks as part of the game. May I always play on the square, no matter what the others do. Help me study the book so I’ll know the rules. Finally Lord, if the natural turn of events goes against me and I’m benched for sickness or old age, help me to accept that as part of the game too. Keep me from whimpering that I was framed or that I got a raw deal. And when I finish the final inning, I ask for no laurels. All I want is to believe in my heart that I played as well as I could, and that I didn’t let you down. Richard Cardinal Cushing "The truth shall set you free" "Because I Said So" Love - If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,[b] but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am ...Expand for more
fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13 "I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious." "It is amazing how much you can accomplish when it doesn't matter who gets the credit. " "The greatest gift a parent can give their children is their unconditional love for each other!"". More about Jake:"Pay It Forward ... Start building ARKS ... Acts of Random Kindness You can tell a lot about an individual by HIS HEROES: My wife of 39 years, BRENDA LAMIE BURTON, who is the love of my life, my best friend and the greatest person I have ever known! Started dating when she was 14 and I was 15; married at 18 and 19; first child at 21 and 22! My Father and Mother, RALPH and VELMA who never got to see me coach a varsity game at McCutcheon. My mother for her attendance at all my activities as well as her discipline, she believed if you loved your children you had to be tough on them, and am I ever glad she was. My father for his understanding, patience and quiet support in all my endeavors. They both went without, so their children could benefit from the fruits of their labor! My football coach, DAVID ELLISON, for teaching me that preparing for your opponent gave you the best opportunity to have success. I never met a coach who was more organized, disciplined or prepared! Another great coach in my life, ART LEMMON, for always stressing the fundamentals of the sport he coached (baseball, basketball, football, and track) and for his persistence in making me the best that I could be! My first principal at Southwestern High School, JOHN CHRISTOPHER, for being a demanding boss and teaching me the work ethic it would take to be a good teacher. My first principal at McCutcheon High School, JOE PICKARD, for taking the chance on me as a Biology Teacher and Coach which began at MHS in 1975. I continued to seek his advice on many topics as they come up in my educational career. I miss him dearly! My second principal, HAROLD RESLER, who selected me to follow Coach Ellison as the 2nd athletic director at McCutcheon High School. Mr. Resler taught me more about being a high school administrator than one could imagine. He was a tireless worker who always had the student’s best interest at the forefront in his decisions. My advice to students is not to be a friend of mine on facebook unless you are aware that if I see anything inappropriate I am going to call you out on it! If you can accept that, then in my opinion, you have taken a step in making yourself a better person!".
