James Barksdale:

CLASS OF 1980
Baltimore, MD

James's Story

Life I enlisted into the United States Marine Corps during the spring of my senior year on the delayed entry program. After taking the summer off, I went to Recruit Training at Parris Island South Carolina (Boot Camp) and graduated in December that same year. After graduating from my Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) School, I was off to my first duty station, Okinawa Japan, I was an eighteen year old, on my own for the very first time. I had the time of my life that first twelve months in Japan. I became efficient at my job, and met some outstanding Americans at the same time. Those outstanding Americans became lifelong friends. That first twelve months in Okinawa Japan was the beginning of my military career. Initially I only enlisted for eight years, four years on active duty and four years of reserve duty. This was my idea of seeing some of the world, outside of Maryland, while at the same time saving enough money for college. Howe...Expand for more
ver, since that time I’ve been on active duty for the past twenty-two years. I didn’t start taking college courses again until my second tour overseas, where I earned my Associates Degree in 1999. I’ve been taking classes towards my Bachelors Degree in Business, which coincides with my present job as a Manager of Personnel and Equipment. Throughout my military career, I have had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the United States, along with tours in Asia. I’ve enjoyed the experience of the Asian culture, along with the uniqueness of each state that I’ve had the pleasure of staying. But, North Carolina beats them all; that is where I met my lovely wife, to whom I have been married to for the past eighteen years; together we have two sons. My family and I just recently returned to the United States after a three-year tour in Iwakuni Japan. Presently we are station in Barstow California, aboard the Marine Corps Logistics Base.
