James's Story

Joined the USAF in fall of '62 (that was planned before graduation); spent almost 1.5 yrs in Texas, 2 years in Myrtle Beach, SC, then last 10 months on Shemya, in the Aleutian Islands (can you say: "Deadliest Catch"?). Right after discharge from USAF, joined IBM, where I worked for 22 yrs, first in Field Engineering, then 7 yrs in sales, before moving to Atlanta. Remarried while in Atlanta, and had two children. IBM moved me to SoFla (Boca Raton) in fall of '83; been here ever since, living in Delray Beach. After leaving IBM in '88 was involved with several start-ups (only one still around is Citrix). Became adjunct faculty at Florida Atlantic University, teaching evening computer courses. Also taught for a computer training company, Florida Dept of Transportation, Broward Community College and Palm Beach Community College. Interesting irony of teaching at PBCC was that here I was, a HS grad, teaching courses to faculty, PhD's in mathematics! What a kick! Was hired in Sept '98 by a software company that sells billing sw to telecom companies, as their first technical instructor. As I'm still there, my responsibilities have evolved from just being a technical instructor to being a sales engineer, supporting the sales efforts from a technical presentation and demo perspective. In the 12+ years I've been there have seen the company's fortunes go from boom to bust, growing from 86 people when I started to almost 600 people, then plummeting during the dot com bubble burst. fs, kind of like Russian Roulette, then the bullet was in the cylinder on the sixth one! Got the axe with many others in May 2005. Company was on the verge of closing its doors when bought by another company in Dec of 2005. Subsequent to that was asked to come back in Jan 2006. Been an interesting ride, company has sent me all over, teaching classes, supporting sales and working trade shows; England, France, Canada, Czech Republic, Brazil, New Zealand, and got to spend 40 days in Australia in 2002. Absolutely LOVE Oz!. Recommend it to all who want to travel but not hassle with a foreign language. Well, they kind of speak English, their brand of it, just like our "American" brand of English. Will probably hang in here, working full time, for a couple more years, providing this company (we were bought again in Dec 2010, by a $2B company in Rochester, NY) stays afloat. Retirement will not mean just kicking back; we will probably move to either the FL panhandle, west of Tallahassee or northern Alabama, as Palm Beach County is overrun with people now and is just too damn expensive. Wherever we land, I will probably look to teaching again in community or vocational college, also become an NRA certified gun safety instructor, and maybe have a little gunsmithing business on the side, as well. I promised my kids (daughter is now 30, married, living in Ft. Lauderdale, with GRANDSON, son is 28 and currently living in California) that I'd live to 100, so... I've got lots to do planned ahead of me!
