As a child, I was sold into servitude in the British navy. I served as a powder monkey on His Majesty's Ship Indefatigable as a mere lad, watching and learning below decks as Captian Sir Edward Pellew and his loyal crew won victories and prizes against the hated French on the open seas. As I grew, I learned the ropes and became an able topsman - anything to escape the drudgery and hellish conditions of life below decks. On one fateful day, a dreadful storm overtook the Indie as she beat for hearth and home. ...Expand for more
I saw my friend Charlie Castle washed across the deck by a rouge wave; I lept to save him, but as I reached for his hand, I was swept overboard. I clung to life, clutching an empty water cask and floating aimlessy atop the waves for days on end. Finally, and Indian merchantman scooped my drenched, half dead body from the sea. Pressed into service, I regained my strength, then, seizing the chance, I lept into the surf alongside an American convey headed to New Orleans. My new shipmates accepted me with warmth and joy, and I sailed to America. I disembarked in the Crescent City found my way inland via the Mississippi River, using my skills as a seaman to earn jobs on ferry boats and paddle boats up and down the Father of Waters. Finally, tiring of the life of a nomadic shiphand, I moved to Garland... ACTUALLY, and for reasons only He knows, God has given me the privilege and honor of ministering to some of the most amazing students in the world. I have served as a youth minister since 1993, and I am blessed enough to get paid to do what I passionately love - to hang out with students and, somehow, make a difference in their lives. I learned long ago to let go and let Jesus have control in this life - although the journey is sometimes tough, in the end the reward is glorious and worthwhile!".
