James's Story
Life
I was divorced in 2005 after 23 years of marriage to Susan Fox, of Sherman Oaks, California. We remain cordial, but she was drawn in other directions. We had no children. In mid-2009, I got back in touch with Tanya Stewart, a lady I'd known back in the mid-90s in L.A., through various Irish Heritage groups. She lived in Berea, KY, when she'd moved after HER divorce.
We talked frequently on the phone for weeks, and in October of 2009, I went back to Berea to visit. That only enhanced things. In May, I took her to Birmingham, AL, to visit my large southern family, and we became engaged. I moved to Berea (about 30 miles south of Lexington) the week before Thanksgiving, 2010, and am now getting used to the snow. <grin> We got married in June 2012.
I am a veteran, having served in the Army from '73 to '79, and was unfortunately injured in service, which has left me with a steadily-worsening back problem. The VA currently accounts me as 100% disabled, but I do rather better than that number might indicate.
I had extensive spinal fusion surgery in July 0f '07, and am recovering nicely. I've been back in the gym since July of '08, and have made huge strides, dropping 60 lbs. and getting in the best shape I've been in in years. In July, 2010, I com...Expand for more
peted in the Los Angeles Bodybuilding Championships, Over 50 and Novice Heavyweight Divisions, and came in 4th in the Over 50 and 5th in Novice Heavies. In 2012, I competed in the Vulcan Classic, in Birmingham, Alabama (4th in Over 50), and the Tricky Jackson Classic in Lexington, KY (failed to place). I'm looking at shows for this November, and focusing on next year's Master's Nationals in the 60+ division.
I am and have been active for 35 years in the Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval learn-by-doing history club, where I received the equivalent of a lifetime achievement award in January 2006. I no longer fight in full armor, but you can see some images at my website. My other hobbies include gourmet and historical cooking, military and religious history, comparative religion, science fiction, and Celtic studies. I have been a lecturer at major literary conventions on the folklore, myths and history of the Celts.
I am currently mostly retired. I do some freelance writing, and am studying to be a personal trainer, focusing on "mature" athletes and those with mobility challenges. I have worked in recent years for Health Net (for five years, ending as Creative Service Manager for National Accounts), CIGNA, Kaiser, JPL, and a host of smaller firms.
