James's Story

I was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, and grew up in a town called Fairbury, about 70 miles South of Lincoln, where my Father was a Dentist and my Mom sang in the Methodist Church choir . One set of grandparents lived in Bloomington, Indiana, and the other set lived in Lincoln. We would take the Rock Island Railroad train from Fairbury to Lincoln often to visit them, which started a lifelong fascination with trains for me. This has fostered a hope that someday, I would have a model railroad in HO scale depicting the Rock Island in Nebraska. I have pieces and parts, and years worth of "Model Railroader" magazine, but thus far, no layout. Ah well....one can always hope! In 1959, my family packed up the family car, and my Dad and Mom, two sisters and our dog, Moses, trekked in a 1956 Ford with a U-Haul trailer on the back all the way out to Huntington Park, California, where I became an active member of the Huntington Park High School Spartan Band. I served as Drum Major in the 61-62 band, worked at Leeds Shoe Store on Pacific Boulevard, won the John Phillip Sousa Band Award, served on the yearbook committee a couple of years, and was a graduate from Huntington Park in 1962. After H.S., I joined the Army and was in Artllery Fire Direction Control, spent a little over a year in Korea, and the rest of the time at Ft. Lewis, Washington. I went to NCO Academy, and for a time, I was a Drill Instructor. I left the Army in 1965, lived in Bell, California and embarked on a series of jobs which led to my career in school Purchasing, which I enjoyed as Director of Purchasing for the Whittier Union High School District until I retired in 2009. Along the way, in 1972, I became active in the Republican Party, which is still true today. I met my wife, Connie while attending Control Data Institute, and we married in 1973. She had two children by a previous marriage, and we had four more together. Today, we are still happily married, which in itself, is an accomplishment! Of our six children four are married or have a significant other, and they have given us the blessing of sixteen grandchildren and 1-1/2 great-grandchildren. (Yep...another on the way!) My wife Connie still works at United Educati...Expand for more
on Institute, where she teaches Medical Billing and is the Program Chair for the Medical Billing Program. I attended West Coast University for a time, but was unable to finish due to money challenges and the time involved in raising a family. I and my wife are active Christians, and I have been active in my Church as Head Usher and Ministering Elder for several years. I also was, and still am, very active in my Community; Ontario, California, where Connie and family and I moved in 1977. I am a Kiwanian, and I enjoyed serving for 16 years as an elected School Board Member for the Ontario-Montclair School Board, and was active in the State School Board Assoctiation. Also, since my six kids went to Chaffey High School here in Ontario, I got involved with the Band Boosters, and served as the Band's announcer wherever they went. I am still involved as the "Voice of the Tiger Pride" and am coming up on my 30th Anniversary as the same. Chaffey also sponsors a Tournament of Bands and I will be announcing (which means I get to tell all my dumb jokes, and folks have to listen!) for the 50th Anniversary of our Tournament this year (2011). Even though retired, I am still active in the State Purchasing organization in my area, and serve on the committtee as the Vendor Show Chairman. I am, or have been, involved in politics on the local and State level for some years, and have been on and off and on and off of the State Republican Central Committee over the years, and assisted in the organization of, and the running of, several campaigns. I serve presently on the Planning Commission for the City of Ontario, and am actively participating in the development of Ontario. I have not kept as connected with my classmates from Huntington Park H.S. as I should have, and have only attended two reunions....the 10th and the 40th. There will be an opportunity to somewhat make amends coming up in 2012 as we will celebrate our 50th Reunion. I hope to serve on the organizing Committee, if asked. All in all, I am having a great time remembering the past, counting my Blessings and am looking forward to the future. Thanks for the opportunity to ramble a bit. Remember....God Loves You And So Do I !!
