James's Story

I was pulling pictures of all the ships I've been on, when I came across a few names from my past. A very pleasant surprise. Since, I left the Fidelity (MSO-443 "Fido"), I've been to:NAS Chase Field (Beeville, Tx... This place was a story by itself), USS Jesse L. Brown (FF-1089), EEAP Program in Charleston, USS Wainwright (CG-28), USS Sierra (AD-18... get this, I was the Assistant Career Counselor for the whole crew) and finally the USS Roanoke (AOR-7)... I thought I was going to retire from Charleston, but everything was decommissioning out from under me... I made ICC In 1983. I was in the EEAP when I went up for Senior Chief. I had a friend that was on the board that year and he chew my butt out royally when he got back. I didn't do any military courses while I was going to school. I missed the cutoff, by one point. Never got close again, everything just closed up. So I retired in 1995, when they decommissioned the Roanoke. They only offered me San Diego and I had had enough. I came back home to Houston from Bremerton, Wa. I started working shutdowns in the chemical plants as an Electrician. After a couple of years I switched to overhauling and building oil rigs. Worked dry-docks everywhere from Pascagoula to Brownsville. Then I made two tour...Expand for more
s to Angola in West Africa. Why didn't I make more tours??? Let's put it this way, the place was surrounded by mine fields... So I came back home, working locally for the same company. I was here in Houston at the time building drilling barges for Brazil. I was working QA/QC, when the engineer popped positive... I was basically at the right place at the right time. Fifteen years before, in the EEAP program, I took a couple of CADD classes. Just for the fun of it. One of the VP's for the company was coming in three days a week to sign off on things. The engineer had been using a drafter to do all the drawings. He would basically draw it out and give it to the guy to do. After the first day, I was predicting his key strokes before he was even doing them. So I told the VP to get me the books and that I would be doing the drawings in a week. Two days later they fired the guy. So here I was doing the QA/QC, Engineering, Testing and designing all the packages with AutoCadd. Luckily, it was only for two months... That was the start of where I'm at now... I'm currently working in Dow's Engineering Office in Houston as an Electrical Designer. I've been here for 8 years. I basically design systems from scratch for the plants... Well, that's my work life...
