James's Story
Life has been good to me . I still have my health and I have profound faith in Jesus Christ . That being said , I guess my time on Earth was nothing more than a test of spirituality . Right now a reader or two , are groaning ' Oh No not another holy roller , " but the facts are the facts .
Looking back 60 or so years I was a kid that loved to play at Evergreen and Wabash playgrounds . Little league was played at Evergreen and I believe they had the only swimming pool for a lot of miles around . My family lived in City Terrance so Wabash was the place we played football and spend 8 hours a day during the summer . No video games , no cell phones , peanut butter and jelly sandwich and an orange in a brown paper bag and water . No McDonalds or cokes , Who had money in those days ? Nobody I know . My dad made about $32.00 bucks a week working at a foundry in Vernon . One thing though , we always ate dinner together every day when my dad got home from work . It was mandatory in my house that my mom make tortillas every day . We'd eat rice and beans and occasionally we'd have a piece of meat . I think I could write a book about City Terrance , Wabash , Belvedere ,and Hollenbeck circa 1955 to 1962 that was my turf . Oh well , talk you y...Expand for more
a guys later . Oh one more thing . Hollenbeck Park had a lake and a boat dock . Yeah right , motorized wooden boats to rent and all the kids could go fishing from the pier . I still remember those days . In the fifties and early sixties Wabash and Boyle Heights were still predominately Jewish . That was just before the exodus to the Fairfax area . I remember my neighbor on Fairmount St. , Mr. Goodman . He was so kind to our family . He's probably been dead 50 years now , but I shall always remember him fondly . I didn't realize it at the time , but most of those people had suffered terribly during WW11 just a few years earlier . There was a Jewish Synagogue right down the street at Fairmount and Evergreen . A couple of blocks north from El Tepeyac I bet I lived amongst a few Holocusts survivors .
A few people may remember him , Bobby Itatani , lived on Blanchard St and he was one of my best friends . His was mom and dad were placed in an interment camp during WW11 . I think his sister was born in camp and maybe he was too . His brother Nelson was too young to remember . In all my years on this earth , Bobbies parents were the most wonderful people I ever met . The Apple doesn't fall far from the tree ... Bobby was pretty special too .
