James's Story

Life Hello to all the people I miss seeing very much. I was a Fort Knox from the end of 8th grade until graduating in 1965. Along the way Paul Gleason and John Murdock and Keith Lucey and Paul Summerson and some of the rest of the swim team were good buddies. We had some wonderful people in our class, many of whom left during high school, and some of whom came back. We got alonog well with the classes in front of us, and those behind, and I think that the 60's at Knox were a golden age for high schoolers. I was in student government and remember Miss Schlinker and Miss Van Dyke very well. My late brother Joe was a great athlete and dated Sherry Noland his senior year. By the way, please write to me if you know where Sherry might be. Since high school I have only seen a handful of people from the class of '65, and would be so happy to hear from any of you. :)I have been to four of the reunions from the class of 1963, and those folks are even more fun-loving than in high school! College I went to the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana from 1965 to 1969, (B.A.) to California State University from 1972 to 1974, (M.A.) and to Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois(M.Div.) from 1975 to 1978. I married my college sweetheart, Gwynne Hookanson, in January, 1969 and we celebrated our 55th last January. I bought Gwynne a red Jaguar F type convertible for an anniversary present and she has a lot of fun driving it. We have three grown girls, all married with children, and a grown son. They live from Orlando to the Chicago suburbs to Austin to Salt Lake City. Army Life Gwynne and I lived in Germany from 1969 when I was a Lieutenant. We spent one magical week in Paris in April in 1970. I was in Korea by myself in 1971-72 but got to have the fun of being a Captain and Commander of a Hawk Missile Battery Commander Career I spent 30 years as a country preacher, including 21 as the founder of Indian Grove Country Church in Rock City, Illinois. I served on the County Board and started 911 for our county. I taught “History of Christianity” for Columbia College of Missouri for many years. I also...Expand for more
taught Western . For a Rockford community college after retiring from the pulpit ministry. Bi-Polar I was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder at age 25 and have been on medications, mostly lithium ever since. Now I am on Limotrigine and it works well for me. Music Composition I have been writing music since college, some instrumentals but mostly songs. Four weeks ago I posted one of my favorites, “Bonjour, Bonne Soiree, Bonne Nuit” on U Tube. It is listed by name with the addition of the word “Enhanced”, The video is 4 minutes long.. It is in French with an English translation. I hope to post other songs as well. Travel We went to several countries while in Germany and have gone back to England and France. We went to Norway for a week for the wedding of our former Norwegian exchange student. We got to Napa Valley train trip and to Oregon. Making Oregon our fiftieth state to visit, plus Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. I got to spend two weeks in Cameroon as a substitute teacher in teacher in the Rain forest International School, a school for the children of missionaries. I’ve been to all six continents and with Gwynne for three, including a great time in Australia and New Zealand. Our favorite area is the Caribbean and we have made 14 trips to islands there, most recently to Guadeloupe in March. There is not a lot to do in our rural county so we try to get to Chicago two or three times a year to see a Broadway road shows, or the Lyric Opera, or the Joffrey Ballet. Gwynne Gwynne is a retired middle school music teacher and the President of the Freeport Choral Society. She is one of the co-founders of CHOM, the Children's Hands on Museum of Northwest Illinois in Freeport. We sing together in the Choral Society. Freeport, Illinois is actually the home of our routine activities and we are moving to a new house there next week. Building a new home at our age has been a challenge, but a lot of fun I am always glad to hear from, or news about Fort Knox High School alumni. Be happy to hear from you! 😊
