James is from Ann Arbor, Michigan. James's schools include Community High School. James later attended Columbia College Chicago (Performing Arts Management, Arts, Entertainment & Media Management) , Washtenaw Community College (General Education) .

I don't think it's the truth but I think it's my truth therefore I'll stick to it and I treat everything from that truth. I don't think it is the truth but it's my truth and I have to live by it 100 percent. People think you're sardonic and critical and extra cynical but I don't think that at all, I'm really a romantic. I know what I like, and if the rest of the world liked what I liked it would be a lot better place. I don't just think I'm right. I think that everybody else is wrong.

In the hardest of times, it's important for us to remember that even though film, music, and fashion might not always address the "big issues," their ability to bring people together in the name of enjoyment certainly illuminates a path by which humanity might just be able to save itself. Surely, that's worth something.

I was walking in Bali and I saw a bunch of people in a clearing having a ball because somebody they really liked just died, and I realized that everything was just how you decided to think about it. Sometimes people let the same problems make them miserable for years when they should really just say, "So what." That's one of my favorite things to say, "So what." I don't know how I made it through all the years before I learned to do that trick. It took a long time for me to learn it, but once you do, you never forget.
