James 's Story

[BE SURE TO CHECK OUT MY PHOTO FOLDER FILLED WITH PICTURES FROM THE 1984 WESTERN STAR REGIMENT MARCHING BAND & COLOR GUARD!] Due to family drama that caused us to move sometimes as often as three times a year, I attended 12 different schools as a kid - including 5 different high schools in two states. Western, in Davie Florida, which was my high school from 1984 to 85, was by far the best. Not because I had a lot of friends and fun (actually, most of the kids at Western were cliquish), but because Western was a brand new school and it seemed like EVERYONE was involved in something - a club, a sport, music, cheerleading, etc. The TV show FAME was huge at the time, and Western actually felt like a high school of performing arts, just like the show. After P.E. I remember the guys suddenly breaking out singing Billy Joel's "For the Longest Time" in the locker room. Kids actually beat you up if they caught you putting graffiti on anything. PEACHES was the music store everyone went to, and NEPENTHE was a teen night club that was really popular with everyone. Around the corner from the school was the magnificent KAPOK TREE INN, where many school events took place and where the cheerleading teams had their yearbook pictures taken. Though I'm ceretain no one remembers me, I was on the yearbook a...Expand for more
nd newspaper teams, drama, and in the concert/marching band ("Western Star Regiment") - and that year we won Western's first band trophies... for Best Band, Best Percussion and Best Brass... at the coveted Deerfield Beach Invitational. A bitter sweet victory because the football team hadn't even won a single game yet, let alone a trophy (and I almost had my brains smashed in when I reminded a player of this fact during half-time after he asked when we were going to finally create a Fight Song for the school). I also attended Christian Academy [High], McArthur High and Hollywood Hills high in Hollywood Florida. My last year of high school - quite literally the most miserable - was at Alhambra High in Martinez California. Since leaving highs school and riding the wildest roller coaster of a life - including (by the grace of God) surviving the '89 San Francisco earthquake, escaping the '92 Rodney King L.A. Riots with half of my teeth broken, surviving a violent hate crime and home invasion, beating deer-tick Lyme disease, and currently battling cancer. I'm now a business owner, a Christian theologian and doctor of divinity, historian, museum manager and Docent, published author, published photographer, civil rights activist, traveller, and happily settled down with my life partner. But enough about me.
