James's Story
Many years are gone, the horizon closer and some of the wisdom of life lived in time is sweet to the soul....
It is great to peruse this site for old faces and names. I am living in Grand Rapids, MI with my wife of 24 years and four boys teenaged and up. For the last 10 years or so I have worked as a substance abuse counselor (a job I spent numerous years beginning at Bowsher high school preparing for - experientially that is). It is fitting to be engaged in the battles I know only too well.
Stayed in Toledo until 1980, got a couple of years of college under my belt at U of T. Moved to rural central MI to Alma where I finished a BA and settled for 16 years. Was a battleground period. reactionary conservatism and then regained my orientation to be what I fancy is a wiser peripheral player with idealistic roots in cultural radicalism, i.e., I still think hippie-like communal social thinking betters modern consumer middleclass.
Moved to Grand Rapids in 1996 and completed a M. Div. in seminary. Went right from there to a residential substance abuse treatment program as a counselor in the central urban city. Been there ever since. Am deeply socially acclimated to the shadow levels beneath the behemoth we call modern industrial/technological society. Culturally on the margins and daily in the belly of the Beast.
Now getting old enough to feel tired but was fiscally too complacent to even consider anything but daily labor.
Hope to hear from any aging folks who still appreciate youthful ideals.
