Mom always said to live your life you need "education or skill". Killing two birds with one stone in '79 enrolled @ Motech, automotive tech school in Livonia, to educate me with a skill !?
Worked at Robey Tire on Maine St. until...
...'80 Brian Curtis and I ventured an epic canoe trip in Ontario.
Got in the water 250 miles north of Sault St Marie at Missinaibi Ont., a couple days paddling north to get through Lake Missinaibi and into the river. 15/20 miles a day for three weeks on the river to Mattice. Great adventure, new to me, old hat for Brian as he and fellow CHS alum Kris Kadlec had started these epic sojourns as soon as they could drive.
Hung in A2 until '83, moved to Los Angeles.
Got an apprenticeship at a machine shop/antique motorcycle restoration shop for a year or so (best job ever, worked for free- no wages) Then on to mechanic jobs, machinist in production machine shop, worked my way up to Service Mgr at a BMW motorcycle shop. etc.
Started road racing motorcycles in '89, won a few So Cal championships and turned...Expand for more
Pro in '95 racing 600s on the AMA National circuit. That racing season ended prematurely and rather badly when I suffered Traumatic Brain Injury.
Long harrowing story? That story ended well...
Became a tester (rode/wrote) for monthly motorcycle publications in the early '90s where I met the woman I would later marry.
Had big plans to ask Laura for her hand in Greek Town (she loves that place!) but the mood wasn't right when we got an Irish waiter (huh?) at Hellas?! We hit Zingermans on the way back to The Curtis Ranch (Brians parents spread out off N Territorial) where I proposed over assorted cured/dried meats & stinky cheese.
Laura and I will celebrate our 20th anniversary this year on 10/10/18
Still in LA, I'm getting home less often these days? Now that I'm nearing 60 it's usually when someone croaks!?
Laura and I have a beautiful home in a great neighborhood a few miles from the ocean.
Things have turned out good for me and those memories from the years hanging out (I was "3rd floor") at school are memories I jealously harbor and will always cherish.
