James Ralph:

CLASS OF 1967
Dover, DE

James's Story

After high school, I started college courses at Del Tech in Georgetown, DE. When I registered for the draft, my classification came back as 1A. Any male from that era knows that means Uncle is going to get you. My draft number was 166 (very low), making me "fresh fish". I decided that if I was to be drafted, I should go and live a little. I quit school and went to LA, Cal for a month or two, then to Honolulu, HA. I had a job in a classic, beautiful, small hotel on Waikiki Beach called the Waikikian. I was there 68-69. I got my draft notice and ignored it. The second one came with an assurance that I would report. I came home and waited it out, then away I went. Two years later I left the US Army. I was married with a child and had another in 1974. I was divorced the same year. I joined the USAF Reserve in '74 and have been at Dover AFB ever since as both a reservist and a civil servant. I am known as an air reserve technician (ART). I was a medic in the army and became a C-5 loadmaster, then a C-5 flight engineer. When I stopped flying I got into my current line of work. world when I crewed the C-5 for short periods. Then I started seeing it for long periods (months at a time). After the Gulf War (Desert Storm) we were ordered to begin taking anthrax shots. I was in the peak of health, very strong and fit and running three miles a day. After the fourth injection I began having heart valve problems very suddenly. I had open heart surgery at Johns-Hopkins in Baltimore on 10 Sep 01 and woke up on 911. You can imagine that scene. I married a Dover High cheerleader named Peggy J. O'Brien in 1982. I knew her from high school days. We started dating after she graduated from Salem College, WVA. I was newly divorced and in no hurry to get married again. Marrying Peggy was the smartest thing I ever did. We have no children but are pretty happy together. I retire from the military and civil service on the same day, 21 Sep 09. My body is beaten up, but my spirit is high. I was born and raised in Wyoming and want to move there after retirement. It is the most beautiful place in the world, to me. That's my story. I am a lucky man to have seen and done all the things that came my way. Jim Ralph March 2008
