James's Story

Military Lieutenant James Smith Biography Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1960. LT Smith while still a senior in high school, joined the Navy Delayed Entry Program in Brooklyn. He graduated from Canarsie High in Brooklyn in June 1979 and July 1979 enlisted on active as Seaman Recruit (E-1). Upon completion of basic training at Great Lakes, IL, he reported to the Naval Aviation Training Center at Millington, TN as a student for the Aviation Ordnance school training. In February 1980, his first assignment (sea duty) was aboard USS Eisenhower( CVN 69) where he was assigned to the Weapons Department in the Hanger and Flight deck ordnance divisions. In January 1983, LT Smith reported to Naval Air Station Oceana, VA at Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department (AIMD) in the Armament Equipment as Aviation Gun shop Workcenter Supervisor. In January 1985, following a successful tour at AIMD, he transferred to Fighter Squadron Eighty-four(VF-84) " Jolly Rogers". While at VF-84, he was assigned to the Armament division in the Ordnance Branch as Nightshift Workcenter Supervisor, Quality Assurance Workcenter Supervisor and Command Career Counselor. In January 1988, he applied for and was selected for a commission through the Limited Duty Officer Program. On May 1 1989, upon his commissioning to Ensign, he received orders to Fighter Squadron Two- One (VF-21)" Freelancers" homebased at Naval Air Station Miramar, CA, and assigned to USS Constellation (CV 64) and USS Independence (CV 62), where he served as Ordnance Division Officer until May 1991. In June 1991, he reported to the USS America (CV 66) homeported in Norfolk, VA, where he served as Weapons Elevator Officer, Magazine Assembly Officer, Senior Beach Guard Officer and Command Fitness Coordinator. to USS Enterprise (CVN 65) homeported in Newport News, VA. , as Ordnance Handling Officer, Magazine Assembly Officer, Flight and Hanger Deck Division Officer and Command Fitness Coordinator. In March 1995, he received notification of his selection to the Degree Completion Program(CDP). In August 1995, he reported to Hampton Roads Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) unit at Old Dominion University for studies at Saint Leo College. In May 1997, he was conferred the Bachelor of Arts (Business Administration specializing in Management). In June 1997, He received orders to Navy Support Facility Diego Garcia (B.I.O.T.) as Weapons Officer. In June 1998, LT Smith reported to the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) as Ordnance Handling Officer. Lieutenant Smith is authorized to wear the Navy Commendation Medal w/Gold star; Navy Achievement Medal; Navy Unit Commendation; Meritorious Unit Commendation; Battle "E' Award w/wreathed "E"(Four Awards); Navy Good Conduct Medal w/2 stars; Navy Expeditionary Medal; National Defense Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Southwest Asia service Medal; Kuwait Liberation Medal; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon w/ 7 stars; Expert Pistol Medal; Rifle Marksman Ribbon and the Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist Insignia. LT Smith completed his military obligation in September 1999. He received his Masters degree in Education with a discipline in Guidance and Counseling from Norfolk State University in Norfolk, VA. in December 1999. Mr. Smith is currently employed at Norfolk State University within the Academy for Collegiate Excellence and Student Success (ACCESS) Department as Coordinator of Academic Advising and is currently continuing his education at The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. in the Doctor of Higher Education Administration Program.
