James's Story

A hearty hello to all. Immediately following high school, Jul 1973, I entered the USAF, and had a 20+ year carreer to include retirement. My USAF occupation was a C-130 Flight Engineer, logging 5,000+ hours flying time, and traveling the globe. I participated, directly, in many world events - combat as well as non-combat related. The invasion of Grenada, Oct 1983, I was ship 19 of a 23 ship Ranger airdrop, on Point Salinas airfield, to kick off the actual invasion. In the summer of 1986, participated in Ronald Reagan's war on drugs, directly, staging out of La Paz Bolivia. 1989, was part of the invasion force to oust Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, and again, airdropped part of a Ranger force, during this operation. A fellow named Saddam...somebody, invaded Kuwait, and was tasked to go over to Jeddah Saudi Arabia, Aug 1990, until Mar 1991, the following year, and our mission was to fly, in direct support of missions in and around the Kuwaiti Theater of Operations. I have many awards and decorations, of which I am proud, but are in a box, here around the house, somewhere. I am sure everyone would be surprised to find out, my wife and I own and operate a "Pecan Company, LLC". We buy, sell, crack and shell pecans, in season, which is a good business and is growing. We got involved in this as a fluke, so to speak. Before this, and after my USAF retirement, in 1993, I got an airline job, with Delta airlines, worked for them for less than 90 days, and found out, flying for civilians is totally not what I had in mind, when I accepted the position. My next move was to go back to college and gain a NC Teaching Certificate, and the college I attended had a truck driver training school. I attended, and earned my CDL. During this period of time, it became clear to me, teaching school was probably not be in my best interest, so I began driving a tractor trailer, hauling to begin with Bennigan's stores, up to and including Long Island NY. Of course, I was dreaming of owning my own trucking company, and signed a 3 year contract, hauling prepackaged medicine for Glaxo, running to Reno NV 3 times a month. This contract actually grew into Big Apple Transport, which grew to 3 trucks, and then, without notice, Glaxo canceled all owner operator contracts and I was stuck with 3 truck payments, and no work. I sold 2 of the 3 trucks, and leased my truck on, to a Company hauling petroleum product, ie: gasoline, diesel, LP, and in Dec 2000, pulled the plug, on owning my own truck, due to extremely high insurance rates and etc. In 2000, I got involved in the truck driver training school business, and trained 360+ students annually. This was a good oppurtunity for me, but, due to 9/11, funding loans for this sort of business became difficult, so we sold our part out, in 2004, and I went back to pulling a gasoline tanker, at night, full time, as a Company employee. The entire time, my wife and I have been developing our pecan business, which is "growing" (no pun intended). I am still pulling a gasoline trailer, waiting to go full time, in the pecan business. The pecan business is very interesting, and we are succeeding at our level of growth, but we haven't as yet gotten to the place where it will sustain us financially, in and of itself. Life thus far has been good, for us, and I wouldn't have changed a thing. We are members of an active church here in our community, and our church is our life, beyond our work. We realize, our real purpose, here on earth, in this life, is to serve God, and we do, to our utmost, to be pleasing to Him. Sure, money is good, but, most importantly, is what we are doing pleasing God ??? I am NOT a deacon, elder, or even a Sunday School teacher for that matter, but, we are there, any and everytime we are able. We just attend, and are available as our Pastor sees fit. We do in fact participate and support every facet of our church, financially as well as with our time and talents. We realize, our ministry, is NOT inside the walls of a church building, but as we go,day in and day out, being the Bible some folk would never see. My wife and I have hit a period in our lives, that we plan, well in advance some really nice vacation getaways, and then we go, and enjoy each other. Many times, we take the kids, along, as you can see in our photo album, we had them go with us, on 1 of our cruises. We also had my sister and nephew go, with us as well. So, we do in fact go, and I do mean go, my wife's middle name I think many times is "go", and, based on my life experience, many times I just want to "stay", but she doesn't allow that, at all. NOTE: As you can see, I have 2 listings under James Smith. Not to confuse anyone, with the details, but, in 1979, I changed my name, from Smith to Braxton, which was my "birth name". Due to "inner family turmoil" at my father's death, in 1978. It has since been resolved, between my brother and I, however, it was a necessity at the time I pursued this action to make a statement to my family. Hopefully it doesn't confuse anyone. FUNNY: During our senior year, we had 1/2 days, many times, and on 1 such day, John Begley class of 1973 and I got out of school, early. We "dined" on pizza at Ernie's Pizzeria, on Main St, and thereafter, I commenced to take him home, up 25A, to Ft Salonga. We left Ernie's, and as we were passing thru Kings Park, a police car, came fast on us, from the rear, and stayed there, and before we were to the top of 25A, leaving KP, he turned on his lights, to stop us, and we stopped, and then 5+ police cars "swarmed" us, in the car. We were taken...Expand for more
out of the car at "gun point" and searched, extensively, as well as the car, and of course beside the road. However, between all of this, John and I were handcuffed, for "our protection", etc. Come to find out, someone earlier in the day, had robbed the bank, at the corner of Main and Indian Head Rd, and we fit the description of the "robbers". Whew, it was nerve racking at the time, as we had no idea what we had done, and yes, we were both scared to our wits end. I am sure John will rememeber, and hopefully this brief story rattles his "noodle". MY DO OVER: If I was able to do over any portion of my life, I would have NEVER pursued aviation as a life's work. It has since been a huge "bust". However, at the time gasoline/jet fuel was NOT a factor, so, it seemed it was well worth the effort, at the time.Knowing what I know now, I would have studied and learned 1 of 2 things, or maybe both, 1.) scrap metal/salvage business, or 2.) trash collection/garbage service business I know this seems odd, to be a life's work, when the cure for cancer is yet to be here and etc, but the "junk" and "trash" business are, for those that pursue them, in a BIG way, quite lucrative. My interest, of course, are the "machines" for processing and collection. This is monster big business, and 1, that would require years to develop, into something of substance. So, I am satisfied to be where I am today. REMEMBER: I would like to take a moment and remember those classmates and teachers of ours, who have passed on before us. I will NOT mention any names, for fear of leaving someone out. In some way, they have all, since they are in our memory, meant something to us, and are Kings Park High School, Class 1973. SCAVENGER: The last employment I had, before entering the USAF, was as a yard man, at a auto salvage yard, in Huntington Station, right on Pulaski Road. I must say, had I known then, what I know now, I would have stayed with this sort of work, and pursued, as I mentioned above, a carreer in the "junk business". Anyway, the influence that job had on me then, is still a part, of what I do today. I keep a pile of "junk" here at the house, and sell it, when I "get a load", so, yes I am a scavenger, for anything of value, ie: scrap metal, of any sort, and etc. So, now, here I am, hauling gasoline to stores, and, once I get the trailer, on site, and hoses hooked up, and the product is flowing in the ground, I have several minutes to "scavenge, which I do. The #1 scavenge place for me is the "store car coin operated vac's" if the store has them. The bottom of the vac has a door, for all the car stuff to go into, and you would be surprised at what folk vaccuum out of the cars. For the most part, it is coins, and then again, I have found "rings" "necklaces" and "paper money", etc, so, I am a true scavenger, I think anyway. Then, it is to the coin operated phones, money is occasionally found in the coin return, and, even though it is just .50, normally, I feel as though I hit the lottery powerball, for $millions$. I also have a hard time, going past a yard sale, if they have "good stuff", I am able to buy to resell. So, it is a good, uhhh, diversion for me, and my wife enjoys it as well. My c.b. handle is, "Junkman", and, it fits me well. Folk tease me endlessly, but, that's ok, I still enjoy it, none the less. NC PASSING THRU OR VISIT: Jeanette and I would enjoy any and all visits, from our classmates, passing thru. We live just 9 miles off I-95, and right at the outlet Stores, here in Smithfield NC. JR's is also a big hit, for those passing thru, and we have gorgeous eateries, as well. Jeanette "flipped" our detached, 2 car garage into a small 3 room efficiency cottage, so, your accomodations will be private and clean. I tried to explain it to Kathi Varachi, before she got here, and she was "shocked" to see how neat and cozy it really is. Kathi Varachi VISIT: Kathi left FL, on her way, back to NJ, and stopped in for a nice lunch, with her sister Toni, KP class of 1989. Thankfully, Jeanette, got off from work, and we had a grand luncheon. We all came back to our home, and Kathi got the "grand tour" of our Green Acres style of living, still a work in progress. Based on Kathi's non-verbal, she was really shocked to see the garage, transformed into the "Cottage". It is always a treat, when folk see the cottage for the 1st time, a real shocker, to be sure. Fred Zauner, class of 1969, I made a huge contact, when I was able to connect again with Freddie. He has been in the food and restaurant business. So, I spoke with him, re: about our pecan venture, and he is developing his own line of high value pecans. His 1st "concoction", pecan brittle, is to die for, I must say. It is sure to be a huge seller, for him, and our plans are to post his products, on our site. Any interest at all, feel free to contact Freddie, he is listed here, as well, class of 1969, he would love to hear from you, for sure. Cruise Sep/Oct 2010, For anyone interested, Jeanette and I are putting together another cruise, with group rates, of course. Will be 7 days out of FL, to Eastern Caribe. If you have no interest in going with us, you are still able to take advantage of our group rate, and set your own sail dates. It is in some cases a 50% savings, off posted list price. All monies are paid directly to Carnival Cruise, we collect zero monies. So, if you've never had a Cruise vacation, let me be the 1st to advise, you will truly enjoy, and a fantastic inexpensive 7 day vacation. Cost: +/- $1,500.00 for 2 people, with a private balcony cabin.
