James's Story

I graduated from Sierra High School in 1965. I went right into college and got my draft notice the Monday after I graduated from college on a Friday in 1969.. I was drafted into the USMC and because of my art major in college, God blessed me with a job in the Marine Corps as an illustrator. After I got out of the military I went right to grad school at CSULB and received an MA in Drawing and Painting in 1975, then onto teaching followed by my Ed.D. in Art Education from Illinois State U, Normal, Illinois, and subsequent teaching position at Azusa Pacific University. My wife and I have 8 children and 22 grand children, three of which are great grand children. In 2016, I retired after my 25th year as an art professor at Azusa Pacific University; 40 years total teaching art if all earlier schools combined. At our 45th Sierra high school reunion, I was saddened to hear that our Sierra HS art teacher, Mr. Hardy, had passed away. During my senior year at Sierra, Mr. Hardy said: "Thompson, you should pursue art!" His expertise and enthusiasm gave me a real push. I so wish I could tell him "THANK YOU MR. HARDY! I DID PURSUE ART". In retirement, I'm still painting😊. My life has been so blessed. I love God, my wife, our kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren. By the way, i...Expand for more
f you have ever made it into Norm's Restaurant in east Whittier on Whittier Blvd near Colima, I am the artist that painted the mural on the wall above their counter area. I completed it in the early 90's. The restaurants owner wanted a cartoon style mural with color, California landscape and Whittier History. You may notice I put the East Whittier Middle School auditorium in the far right panel and, per the owner's request, you'll see it is located at the beach. If you're from Whittier like me, and went to what was then called East Whittier Junior High, I'm sure we all wish it had been located at the beach. Well, I know we all realize time is moving on and as I pen these thoughts, I think of my own mother now 104. Whittier was such a great place to be raised, grow up, and go to school. I know life can be very hard and sad at times, but my joy and strength come from God who doesn't change. I hope you know he loves you profoundly. It is because of my belief and trust in God that I can look forward to painting my next new painting and going on that next bike ride. When it all ends for me I know I have eternal life in Christ. Read the New Testament book of John and go to John 3:16. It's true for all who believe in him. May God bless and keep you on your own journey. Jim
