James's Story
I wasn’t a go-getter in H S. I had the same opportunities that classmates had, but just coasted along, not realizing things in future technology I could really do.
One of my teachers, Mr. Greer- teaching Physics- was the main reason I decided to go to college. He challenged me when handing out the last test of my senior year and said "Well, Jim, you passed pretty good, but you shouldn't bother with college. You are smart and you know how things work, but you're lazy and don't study." I took his challenge anyway. etter judgment than most others. After graduation and getting commissioned in the Army, I was hired by IBM to work in battlefield and Aerospace computer research and development, and the next 30 years was an awesome career. I had a major part in the growth of the computer age. I got IBM a few patents for advanced circuits for computers, and got to help develop some special computers for use by the Atomic Energy Commission. And IBM saw fit to let me spend a year in advanced studies of Solid State Physics. Wow! Little did I realize, in H S, how great a career in Technology could be. I'm now 87 years old, and I still miss the excitement of High-Tech research.
