James's Story
After graduating from Baton Rouge High, I attend Millsaps College in Jackson, MS majoring in pre-med. The school being $4000 a semester back then led me to attend LSU where I majored in Chemistry and attained my B.S. in 1983. I met my wife Susan in 1980 and we got married after accepting my commission in the U.S. Navy. I flew jet aircraft for the first year and finished the remainder of the active duty on a nuclear cruiser (USS Long Beach CGN-9) out of San Diego, CA. I visited Hawaii 8 times, ports in Japan 4 times, took leave with my wife on one cruise for 2 weeks and saw most of Japan including Peace Park in Hiroshima where the bomb was dropped. I've been to Korea, Phillipine islands, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. moved back to Zachary in 1996 where I started working at Exxon refinery in Baton Rouge as a lab technician to be later hired on in 1998. I'm still at ExxonMobil now and my two children (Christian and Jeanell ) are 24 and 21 respectfully. Jeanell's following in my footsteps attending LSU with the goal of getting a Master's Degree in Anthropology to later get a pHD in forensic anthropology from either Baylor or Tennessee. Christian has an associate degree in Computer Technology and works at LSU. My wife Susan works 8-5 at an elementary school in Zachary as a secretary far from her degree in computer science but most importantly she enjoys her job. For me, I enjoy my days off from work working on my honey-to-do lists and projects in my yard (garden, swimming deck,building a small building to house my five dogs, and other projects to keep me busy even after retirement which will be in about 8 years.
