James's Story
After graduation from Tam, I would attend and graduate from UCLA with a BA in political science. As a result of spending a year in college studying abroad (Chinese University of Hong Kong) after graduation from college, in 1973 I applied for and was accepted into the U.S. Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer. I had six assignments over the 12 years I served in the Foreign Service, four overseas (Latin America, the Far East and the South Pacific) and two in Washington D.C. While serving in Fiji and visiting the island nation of Tonga, I met and eventually married my wife. We left the Foreign Service to re-settle in the Bay Area in the mid-1980¿s. In 1989 I finished my pursuit of a master¿s degree in public administration at Cal State/Hayward. While at Cal State, I began working for the City of Sunnyvale as policy analyst.

In 1999, I left Sunnyvale to join the senior staff of San José Mayor Ron Gonzales as his Senior Policy Advisor. With a population of 950,000 residents, San Jose is the largest city in northern California and the 10th largest city in the country. I would serve on the Mayor's senior staff for nearly eight years, including a total of almost two years as his acting Chief of Staff and as acting Chief of Staff in a Council district office.
In November 2006 I was appointed Director of Government Relations at San Jose Airport.
My wife and I have been married for 26 years. We have two terrific sons, James and Chris. In August 2007 we became grandparents with the birth of our first grandchild, an adorable little girl. We have happily and proudly lived in San José for almost 20 years.
