James's Story

Life Hi folks, In cleaning out our attic the other day, I ran across my 1968 yearbook. Wow, did that ever bring back some memories! I believe the only reunion I attended was the 10th, so I have seen very few Smith folks since then. In school I was sort of one of the "invisible" people. I guess I had a small circle of friends, but not really that many what you would call close friends. I didn't belong to clubs or play sports. I felt like I needed to work. Anyway, after school things began to change. For one reason or another I didn't make it to college. That has been a small regret, but I've done OK. The first "big" thing occurred immediately after my father died in March of '69. Of course that in itself was major. I got hooked up with a local country band and sang with them for about three years. That certainly helped get rid of some of the shyness I had always struggled with to that point. I had also begun to serve as a "song leader" for the little church I attended. About this time too, I met my wife, Cindy, who came from a larger church to play piano for us. We've been married 34 years now and have three children and 3 grandchildren with one more on the way. Through the years I realized that even though I had no formal training in church music, that was exactly what God was preparing me for. I served on store staff at three different Sears stores as Display Manager for 20 years while doing the music ministry part-time. During these years, I had the opportunity to gain a...Expand for more
lot of the music education I had missed by attending countless seminars, and having had the blessing of having had several mentors through the years. I left Sears in 1992 to pursue full-time music ministry. That same year I was led to my present position as Minister of Music and Sr. Adults. Also in 1992, I was ordained into the ministry, so for official purposes I have a "Rev." in front of my name. During these years in the ministry, I have had the opportunity to minister in several other countries, such as South Africa, Zambia, and Brazil, both musically and in preaching. As far as the kid's, all three attended and graduated from college. My son, the oldest child, has one and a half of our grandchildren, lives in Virginia and works as a counselor in a facility for at risk kids. He has a group of 11 - 13 year old guys. My oldest daughter has become recently engaged and teaches middle school Science and Math also in VA. The youngest girl graduated from UNC-G, is married and has the other two grandchildren. I'm certainly not boasting, but those few of you that knew me, probably wouldn't think I'm the same guy who was in the background and on the fringes most of the time in school. I am truly blessed to have had the experiences I've had, and been able to see how God has made a way for me. OK - I've used up about three thousand of my 4,000 words so I guess I'll close. If we're thinking of a 40th reunion, please post it on this site. I love to see some of you. Blessings! Jim
