James's Story

Life Well, I don't remember the 60's much so I must have experienced them pretty well. In the early 70's I joined the Navy. Was able to play a part in the evacuation of Viet Nam. In the late 70’s I resumed the civilian role. I located in the Triad area of North Carolina, got back into carpentry and spent about 18 years building houses and other structures. During that time I met my wife Katie and we had our first child Anna. In 1989 my Father passed away and Katie and I decided to move back to Ft. Lauderdale (Lauderhill) to be close to my mother who was still doing quite well. We felt it would be good for some family to be there for her. Upon arrival I took a job with a local construction company. After working for several months I realized that I did not like the general attitude of the construction industry in South Florida. Ability seemed to take back seat to politics. At the ripe old age of 38 I decided to make a major change in life. I went to B.C.C. and enrolled in an enginee...Expand for more
ring program. In 1995 I graduated from F.A.U. with a BSEE with high honors. Now tell me it is ever too late! There is always a trade off. Two months before I graduated my mother passed away. But 2 months before that my son Thomas was born. My reason for being in Florida now gone I packed up my family and returned to North Carolina. I managed to go to work for a company that designs large audiovisual and video conferencing systems. I became fairly well accomplished at the design end and also the programming of the control systems that control all the devices in the buildings. I have put rooms in for the Secret Service, I.R.S., and many other government and military organizations. On that terrible day 9/11 when President Bush went to Offutt Air Force Base, he used one of my systems to communicate with the White House. He even is said to have remarked on the quality of the system. I work for a company in the D.C. area but I have the luxury of working from my home. Life really is a trip.
