James's Story

After high school in 1960, I attended the University of Utah, dropped out, and worked for a couple of years, then finished up at BYU in 1967. I taught secondary ed for a while, then in February, 1970, started Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation technique. In less than a year, I attended a Teacher Training course in Mallorca, Spain, to become a TM teacher. Most of my life since then has been involved in one way or another with the TM Movement. In 1992 I received a Ph.D. in English from the University of Iowa. By that time, I had been living in Fairfield, IA, for a couple of years while writing my dissertation. For three years, I worked on, then directed, a publication from Maharishi International University called MIU World. In 1995 I started teaching Professional Writing for MIU and in 1999 began to teach for the Literature and Creative Writing Department. Although I'm retired, I still teach online courses to supplement my income. Everyone at MIU—including faculty, staff, and students—practices the Transcendental Meditation technique. Needless to say, TM transformed my life from a troubled youth to a (fairly) responsible adult. I've been living in Iowa since 1983 and consider it my home state. These days, I hardly recognize Las Vegas, where I grew up, and rarely visit there. Iowa is a very wholesome state with little atmospheric pollution, though the water is pretty bad because of so many insecticides and chemical fertilizers in the soil. F...Expand for more
airfield, where MIU is located, is a small rural community surrounded by corn fields with very little crime or stress of any kind, yet it's less than a day's journey from bigger cities like Iowa City, Chicago, Des Moines, St. Louis, and Kansas City. The Golden Domes, where the TM community practices the TM & TM-Sidhi programs and generate wonderful vibrations that sweeten the air and enliven positivity near and far. As of 5/04/22, I've completed the course work for my Ph.D. in Maharishi Vedic Science and am currently working on my second dissertation proposal. In other words, I've decided to do a less philosophical (Emerson & Thoreau) and more literary (Wordsworth, Keats, & Coleridge) dissertation involving a number of transcendental poets in light of Maharishi Vedic Science. My rationale for seeking a second Ph.D. is simply the desire to keep myself active and youthful. Recently, I've been traveling a fair amount. I visited India three times and traveled from the southern tip to as far north as Rishikesh (where the Beatles stayed with Maharishi). In 2017 I visited Mallorca once again for an advanced TM course and last year to the Dominican Republic for a follow-up to that course. In March I crossed another milestone: I turned 80, as probably many of you reading this are approaching or have already reached. It's not so bad, really; I hardly noticed anything. I hope everyone who reads this is happy, healthy, and enjoying life. All the best, Jim
