Military
Volunteered for US Army during Vietnam War when military was still viewed as patriotic service in the US South. I started with jump school and then was assigned to the 82d Airborne Division as an FDC in 4.2 inch mortar platoon of Hqs Company in 1/508th Infantry Battalion as a private. Assignment included period when fellow members had just returned from service in Dominican Republic and ended as they prepared for riot duty in Washington, D.C. I applied for Warrant Office Rotary Wing Flight School, which I attended and was subsequently assigned to the 1/9th Cav Sqdn, 1st Cav Div in Vietnam for a year as a Warrant Officer. That assignment included time in Khe Son relief of Marines, assist of 101st Abn Div in Ashau Valley, assist of Marines near Danang and duty in the Angel's Wing near Tay Ninh prior to invasion of Cambodia. ls around the 2 baht tour of Uttapao airbase and Sattahip port. We supported engineers building ammunition roads in Northeast Thailand for the USAF bombing the Ho Chi Minh Trail from Thailand. Last six months of 2.5 yr tour was working out of Udon flying into Laos for Project 404 after I received a direct commission to 1st Lt. Served as Standarization IP in Fort Stewart, Georgia for two years, then as detachment commander and battalion ops off with 1st Battalion 7th Special Forces Group in Ft. Bragg. Attended Armor Officer Advanced Course at Fort Knox, KY, then completed undergrad work at Univ. of Nebraska at Omaha. Subsequently assigned to 1st Inf Division Forward as G3 Plans Officer, then company C commander with 1st Bn, 28th Inf. Then, I attended grad school at Monterey Inst. of Int'l Studies and afterwards attended the language school at DLI in Monterey, CA before attending Indonesian Army Command and Staff College in Bandung Indonesia. My final assignment was to manage Int'l Military Educ. and Trng Program at US Embassy in Jakarta. Retired in Nov 85 after 20 years service as a Major. Life then began as a 37 y/o retiree living and seeking to earn a living in Indonesia.
