One of the biggest surprises in my life is how short our lives really are. And I want to remember that each day as I go to get groceries, pick my kids up from school, feed the dogs, wait in line, listen to a favorite song, laugh with my husband, chat with my mom, have coffee with a friend. I think the weirdest job I ever had was drawing blood at a N.Y. hospital. Some patients loved to call me the vampire. There were a few muscle-y men who nearly fainted when I stuck that little needle in their arm. Poor guys.
