James's Story
Attended SUNY Maritime College, and graduated with an Engineering major and an Architecture minor in 1968. I was hired by Esso [ExxonMobil] out of college. Traveled the world for 24 years, working for an amazingly great company, and took advantage of a special early retirement program. Handed "a bag of Gold and a lifelong pension" I retired at 46, in 1992, as Exxon's Chief Engineer.
Moved from New Hampshire to beautiful Raleigh, North Carolina to open a new business in 1993. Designed, opened and operated a Cinema Grill (movie theater/restaurant) for 27 years,
way before the concept became popular! Reviewed as "The Triangles Highest Rated Movie Theater and only truly Unique Restaurant". When we recorded a TV ad, our 'movie star' young employees didn't show up for the Monday 9 AM ad shot so the Director stuck both of us in the ad!

Our children, four daughters and one son, worked at the theater during college breaks and after finishing college and graduate school they all moved back to Raleigh. (Boston College, American University, Amherst, Appalachian, Duke)
Everyone is local except for daughter #4 who lived in LA before moving to Austin, TX. We are blessed having most of our 10 and still counting, grandchildren living nearby.
Taking to heart, Carl Sagan's observation "Extinction is the rule, survival is the exception" and watching huge flat screen TV being 'given away' at Sam's & Costco, with the explosion of internet streaming, we knew Movie Theaters were going the way of Blockbuster.
Taking Kenny Rogers advise 'You gotta know when to fold...Expand for more
them, know when to walk away and know when to run!' It was time to 'take the money and run'. We closed our theater in 2019. Talk about good timing, we were able to sell our business assets three months before, to paraphrase Camus' 'The Plague' put the final nail in the Movie Theater coffin.
After my second retirement, having worked since I was thirteen, I started to feel the curse of boredom. In 2020, at 73, I took a position as Facilities Engineer at The Cypress of Raleigh, 5 miles from our home. A great place, it keeps me busy and I enjoy it! My third career and first '9 to 5' job since working at Mineola High School during the summers.

My wonderful wife retired as the Trust Account Vice President of BB&T bank and for 'fun' became a Real Estate agent. Being a 'people person' as opposed to and being married to an Engineer, she loves it and is a Gold Star Agency Performer.
We still live in our 'old' family home, 6800 sq ft, five bedrooms, three fireplaces and four baths on 2 1/2 wooded acres in the rolling hill forest called Wood Valley of beautiful North Raleigh. Sadly our two Irish Setters and Standard Poodle have passed. We have two new dogs, a female Cavachon [mixed breed cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Bichon Frise] I call Mayday! Mayday!
We adopted a seven year old American Champion (retired) Irish Setter, Junior. The fun continues!!!
