James's Story
Life
My first career was teaching science, along with coaching football and basketball. After teaching for nine years, I got a PhD from Ohio State. I have been doing human factors engineering for 18 years, including three years in the vaunted Silicon Valley of California.
The highlight of my time in California was living in in a cabin in the Santa Cruz Mountains accessable only via 4wD. I lived in the redwoods with the bobcats, deer and mountain lions - solar electric, wood stove heat and water from a spring 300 feet up the mountain. The creek that had to be forded to get to the cabin flowed six- eight feet deep and ran about 30 MPH during rainy season. This required access to the cabin via a swinging bridge built of elevator cable, hanging 30 feet over the canyon floor!! Just eight miles from the San Andres fault and 10 miles from Monterey Bay, forest fires and earthquakes kept things hopping.
College
I received my BSED in Comprehensive Science from Ohio University, qualifying me to teach all secondard science subjects. I was a founder and the first president of the Ohio University men's volleyball club.
My MEd is in Natural Science from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington.
My PhD is from The Ohio State University. It is unusual in that I took a multidiscip...Expand for more
lanary studies. I studied cognitive systems enginering, neuropsychology, physiological psychology, neuroanatomy, neurology, biomedical engineering, sensory biophysics, statistics, research design and computer science.
Workplace
Following my nine year teaching career and three years of course work toward my PhD, I moved to Dayton, Ohio, completing my dissertation while working full time. I held positions that included princial scientist and division director.
I spent three years in the Silicon Valley where I worked as a senior staff engineer for Portal Software.
In 2002, I returned to Dayton to start The Design Knowledge Company, where I am CEO and Chief Scientist. We are a defense contractor specializing in engineering research to develop technology in the areas of intelligent agents, semantic web applications, support tools for intelligence analysts, and counterspace work. We employ modleing and simulation and human factors engineering talent to accomplish our work.
I also have a consulting company, Design for Usability, of which I am President and Principal, primarily conducting usability studies for software applications and web sites. We have customers such as LexisNexis and America's Job Bank, using our portable usability lab to conduct studies whereever customers have need.
