James's Story

Life CW04 James F. McDonough, USN (Retired), native of Newburgh, N.Y. was born on 2 August, 1936. He attended Brookline High School in Brookline, Mass. and graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in Newburgh, New York in 1955. Chief Warrant Officer McDonough joined the Naval Reserve in September 1954 while attending high school and started his active military career in September 1955. He was then transferred to the USS BUSHNELL (AS-15) on March 1956 for a short period of time and the USS ORION (AS-18) for a tour of duty in the Ordnance Repair Division In June 1958 he was ordered to the U.S. Naval Mine and Net Depot at Melville, Rhode Island (Prudence Island) where he accomplished various mine assembly and maintenance functions. He attended Class "B" Mineman School from April to September, 1961 at the Naval School Command, Charleston, South Carolina and was transferred to the Naval Magazine, Subic Bay, R.P. filling a Mineman billet thru November, 1964. CWO McDonough was transferred to the Drill Mine Preparation Facility at Long Beach, California in November 1964. There he was appointed Warrant Officer as an Underwater Ordnance Technician in December, 1966. Subsequent to a short course of indoctrination at the Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. in January and February 1967, he was ordered to the Mobile Mine Assembly Team (MOMAT 0322) at Charleston,S C. as OIC of a MOMAT Detachment. He made several deployments to Keflavik, Iceland during 1967. In July, 1968, he was transferred to the Mobile Mine Assembly Unit, Atlantic, Charleston, S.C. where he served as OIC of a MOMAULANT Detachment. In 1969, CWO McDonough made deployments to Keflavik, Iceland and Glen Douglas, Scotland. In January, 1970 he was transferred to the Naval Ordnance Unit, Key West and shortly thereafter to the Naval Station, Key West, where as Assistant Research and Development Officer and Boat Division Officer, he provided logistic support and technical services to fleet units and shore activities in the Key west...Expand for more
area. Other assignments included Ordnance Officer and Training Officer. CWO McDonough received orders to the Naval Magazine, Guam M.I. in November, 1971 where he was asssigned as Mine Division Officer and Mine Administrative and Logistics Officer. CWO McDonough returned to CONUS in July 1974 and reported to the Naval Mine Engineering Facility, Yorktown, Virginia. As Assistant Fleet Liaison Officer for New Mine Developments and Submarine Laid Mines, he was instrumental in Logistics Support Planning for mines such as CAPTOR. CWO McDonough reported to COMOMAG in Charleston, S.C. in September 1977. He was assigned as OIC of a MOMAG Detachment, Mine Warfare Exercise and Training Program Officer and Administrative Department Head. During his tour at COMOMAG he deployed to Souda Bay, Crete. CWO McDonough retired from the United States Navy in October, 1981. In 1983, he enrolled at Trident Technical College (TTC) and received training in Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration and Electronic Servicing. CWO McDonough obtained an associate degree in electronic/electrical engineering technology in August, 1987. In 1988 he was hired by TTC as an Adjunct Instructor in the Continuing Education Department. As a TTC Instructor, he provided technical training to Control Equipment Technicians at the Charleston Dupont Plant until 1996 at which time the E. I. Dupont company hired CWO McDonough as a Training Consultant thru 1998. He also continued to work for TTC to provide technical training to Alcoa (formerly Alumax) Plant technicians until 1998. During his Naval Career CWO McDonough was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal (second award) National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Expert Ribbon-45 Caliber Pistol and the Navy Commendation Medal. CWO McDonough was married to the former Eva Yearwood of Newburgh, N.Y until her death from Leukemia in April 2009. They have four children, Elizabeth (married),Timothy (married), Susan, (married) and John.
