James's Story
Life
I finished my college coursework in wildlife management at Humboldt State University (Dec. 86). My career has taken me to places I never thought I'd ever get to venture. By the time I graduated from Sacred Heart I was an Eagle Scout and would eventually log in over a 1,000 miles of hiking in the Sierras. I wasn't a very good student in grade school with average grades but once entering high school that all changed and I studied hard to get into a good college. College life was not easy but I soon became comfortable on campus and made good lifelong friends that Iam still in contact with today. I secured a job with the National Marine Fisheries up in Alaska of all places and worked on 3 different foreign fish processor boats from Japan, Korea and Poland. This was great experience and being one of two Americans onboard I was totally immersed in their culture as I stayed out in the Bering Sea for 3 months per tour. My Dad had gotten transfered to Seattle,WA when I graduated from college so I made WA my new home based state. I began working with WA Dept. of Fisheries on the mouth of the mighty Columbia River in Ilwaco. I bought my first 500.00 boat and caught my first white sturgeon and king salmon. Life was good! Later I worked on the Green River checking steelhead fishermen and collecting fish biological data. I was living at home at this point and helped move my mom and sister up to WA. This was an outdoorsmans paradise! For Christmas that year I was surprised to find a letter for a full time job that my boss put in for me. I started work on Jan. 1, 1989 in a small town in the north east corner of WA covered in snow. I was a babe in the woods, no doubt, and looked forward to spending the next two years in this little tucked away hideaway. Well, almost 20 years later I'm still here enjoying to the fullest the small town lifestyle and all the hunting and fishing opportunities one could ever wish. I have definately had a guiding guardian angel on my side my whole life. I started a home based business 15 years ago to really spice up my l...Expand for more
ife and provide fun for the summer crowd. This venture was not in my field of interest as I don't possess a business degree or had any help getting it started. This was a learn as you go operation. My business is called Jim's Water Cycles, a waverunner rental business. I look forward to the chaotic lifestyle during the summer and then look forward to the Fall hunting season. I have definately gotten a taste of what it is like being in business for myself. More than any other benefits from it, I like the fact that I took the financial chance on an idea I literally dreamed about one night, having never ridden a watercraft, and made a successful business. This has given me a great sense of personal accomplishment. Along the way while up here I have become an avid angler and recently purchased a fishermans dream boat that is tournament ready. I have done some guiding on Lake Roosevelt for walleye and rainbow trout and feel eventually I will take a more serious look at starting a second business. Another serious passion I acquired while in my senior year of college was waterfowl hunting. It may still be posted on final approach blinds a testimonial I submitted a couple years ago with a picture. Actually calling in wild canadian honkers to your blind and being able to take them is an art form in many areas: Learning how to use a goose call, being concealed, experince in shooting a shotgun, and setting up decoys the right way. When you can land a flock of 30 to 50 geese inside 20 feet from you on the ground, you know you have arrived! This is a lot of fun and my self trained labrador retriever gets his workout too! Well, this summer Iam finally taking the sportsmans ultimate vacation, a 10 day salmon and halibut fishing trip up to Alaska. It may be my once in a lifetime opportunity but I have to do it once. Hopefully recent photos and memmories will bear my fishing success. Until then, I wish all my classmates the best that life has to offer and success in all your endeavors!! Take Care....Lifes' road to success is always under construction.
