James's Story

Life I was born in North Hollywood, California to Hungarian immigrant parents who had come to the U.S. in 1956. I lived and went to school in North Hollywood till graduating high school in 1980. I had gone to Fair Avenue Elementary, Sun Valley Jr. High and North Hollywood High School. My father passed away in 1979 during my senior year at NHHS, and I moved to Burbank soon after graduating. I lived in Burbank for nine years, and I focused on developing a career in Computer Sciences in the mid '80s. By 1986, I had established myself as a Computer Consultant specializing in IBM midrange and P.C. systems, which I do to this day. In 1988, I met and married my wife Julie Ann, and we moved to Huntington Beach in 1990, where we have lived ever since. We have no children. Julie Ann is an antique and collectibles dealer on the Internet. Since the age of 12, I have been involved with amateur radio, computers and astronomy, which are still my favorite hobbies. We also like to travel, especially on day and weekend trips like Las Vegas, San Diego and to the Central and Gold Coasts. I am an avid NASCAR fan and am a Club Member at the California Speedway. I can often be found at Irwindale Speedway, too. Also, I am a supporter of the San Diego Zoological Society, the people who run the San Diego Zoo and S.D. Wild Animal Park. I have only kept in touch with a few people from my childhood, but I have a few close friends from then, and I have been pleasantly surprised by some of the people who have gotten in touch with me through classmates.com. School I lived in the same house in North Hollywood from the time I was born till I graduated high school. I went to school at Fair Avenue Elementary School, Sun Valley Junior High School and North Hollywood High School. After high school, I went to Los Angeles Valley College, Computer Learning Center of Los Angeles and IBM to focus on training for a career in Computer Technology. I did not find school very interesting in 1st and 2nd grades, and I had mediocre grades. My...Expand for more
3rd grade teacher Mr. Mixsell turned me completely around by getting me interested in science and math. I quickly became a nearly straight-A student and part of the Gifted Program. My biggest influence was Doug Acrea, a teacher I had in 4th grade. He got me interested in Amateur Radio and Astronomy and helped me develop my interest in computers. Doug was my mentor and remained my friend till well after I graduated high school. I helped him as a "teacher's assistant" for elementary school summer programs, while I was in Junior High School. I continued my focus on science and math through high school and eventually made a career out of computers. In high school, I was very involved with the Honors Program and with school service groups. Also, I was a big fan of the football program, having gone to every home game and nearly every away game while I was at NHHS. I was pretty outgoing in 10th and 11th grades. Unfortunately, my father passed away in my senior year, and I became rather reclusive, and I did not socialize much. In retrospect, I wish I could have handled that time in my life differently. Nonetheless, I did graduate near the top of my class. I have kept in touch with only a few people that I went to school with, but I have been pleasantly surprised by some of the people that have gotten in touch with me through classmates.com. College College was a bland experience for me. I went to classes after work to get experience for my career, and to help me decide between a career in Computer Sciences or Broadcasting. I chose Computer Sciences, a decision I often question and sometimes regret... Workplace I have been a Computer Consultant since 1985, specializing in IBM midrange systems such as the AS/400 / iSeries400. In my career I have held positions including Programmer/Analyst, Systems Engineer and I.S. Manager, but mostly I have done consulting assignments. I also have an extensive background in personal computers. I do my consulting work through my own company Bruin Computer Services.
