James Montgomery:

CLASS OF 1982
South haven, MI

James's Story

Life I moved to Los Angeles in 1987 after graduating from the University of Michigan with a BS in Computer Science. I worked as a software engineer for Hughes Aircraft Company from 1987-1997 and Raytheon from 1997-2000. I am now at JPL/NASA doing robotics research for planetary exploration missions. I attended the University of Southern California, receiving a Masters in 1992 and a PhD in 2000, both in Computer Science. Living in LA has pros and cons. On the pro side, there is a wide variety of cultural (food, music), geographic (ocean, mountains, desert), and social activities (year-round sports, backpacking) to enjoy. On the con side, there is a high cost of living, along with congestion and pollution. In South Haven, with our clean air and open spaces, I never...Expand for more
thought about the environment. Living in LA with 25 million people and sucking engine exhaust while commuting an hour to work every day alters your perspective! I've become very concerned about the environment. I've been driving electric cars since 1992, adopted a vegetarian diet about 5 years ago and a vegan diet last July, and try to lessen my impact on the planet in all that I do. I donate my time and money to environmental, youth and social change groups. I'd like to help leave this planet a little bit better when I'm gone than when I arrived. (Yes this is the same Jimmy Montgomery that you went to school with! ;-) ) I hope we have a 20 year reunion next year so I can catch up with all of you and see what you've been up to. Hope you're all healthy and happy!
