James's Story

I am married to Susan, who I met in an English class at the University of Minnesota in 1973. We were married on June 18, 1977. I attended the University of Minnesota, studied English Literature, and obtained my B.A. in December 1973. I attended the University of Minnesota Law School and graduated in June 1977. Susan and I were married one week later. I taught at the University of Miami Law School while Susan completed her law degree. I then worked in private practice in Minneapolis. Susan is also a lawyer and has worked with Nan Miller, one of our classmates in the firm of Trotzky, Miller and Roth. She also lobbied for Family and Children's Services of Minneapolis. She worked at Minnesota State Planning from the end of the Perpich administration through the beginning of the Pawlenty administration (when it was decided that long-range planning was no longer needed). (One year, Minnesota State Planning won all three annual awards given by the Department of Justice Bureau of Criminal Justice Statistics for reports she wrote and edited.), She then worked as Ramsey County Recorder. She is now retired. I am retired from practicing law. One of my long-time passions is international human rights. I was one of the co-founders and the Advocates For Human Rights and the Center For Victims of Torture in the early 1980s. I continue to lobby on a volunteer basis on international human rights and foreign policy issues. I wrote the initial draft of an anti-torture bill introduced as the McCain-Feinstein Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 2015. It was passed as Section 1045 and eventually signed into law by President Obama. I also lobby the Minnesota State Legislature on human rights and disability-related issues. I worked with a group called Autism Treatment Association of Minnesota, including Lincoln classmate Nancy Schussler, to pass a law requiring insurance companies or provide coverage for a form of treatment for children who are severely autistic called Applied Behavior Analysis. I'm currently working with a group of small group homes that provide treatment for people with advanced dementia and Lincoln graduate Dawn Kuzma to amend Minnesota laws that were passed to deal with abuse and neglect of seniors in large nursing homes but that place unreasonable regulatory burdens ...Expand for more
on smaller homes of five or fewer residents called "micro homes." One of the groups we're working with is Breck Homes which is just south of Kennedy High School. Susan and I also owned and operated an art gallery for a few years, and I worked with one of our nieces, Salome Castro, on a business designing furniture for the Hispanic market. My interests include spending time with my family, baseball, music, reading, writing, and serving on non-profit boards. I enjoy jazz, classical, some rock, and a little bit of country. I like books such as "War and Peace," "The Magic Mountain," "The Tale of Two Cities," and "Remembrance of Things Past." I have enjoyed movies such as Hotel Rwanda, The Year of Living Dangerously, and Z. I read the Senate Intelligence Committee Report on Torture while sitting on the beach in Barbados. We enjoy spending time with our nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephew, and most recently, our great-great-nephew Nekoda, who is ten months old. I am currently finishing a novel on international human rights focusing on the issue of torture. I also write advocacy pieces on international human rights and foreign policy issues, primarily in the Middle East. I recently wrote an article on police reform for MinnPost. I'm also working with law students from the University of Minnesota and St. Thomas Law School on a project to encourage the Minnesota State Board of Investment, which invests pension assets for county and state, and municipal public employees, to incorporate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in its investing decisions. I'm enjoying working on tracing my family genealogy. I discovered that my paternal grandfather was born in an area that is now part of Ukraine. My maternal great-grandfather was born in Belfast, and my maternal great-grandmother was born in Dublin. I'm auditing international human rights classes at the University of Minnesota Law School as a senior student. (One of my professors was also my professor for real property law during my first year of law school!) I recently wrote a paper, "Transforming the Minneapolis Police Department to Conform with the Rule of Law; Reform or Abolition." that is being shared with local officials. I enjoyed our 50+1 year class reunion, and I'm looking forward to our 55th class reunion.
