James's Story
6July2013
I have lived in Monticello IL since June of 1981. I have been married to Linda(Goodwin) for 43 years. She is from Wilmington IL and we met while at the University of Illinois. We have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. I have been in the grain trading business most of my adult life and have lived in southern Illinois(Wayne City near Mt Vernon), HoopestonIL(sweet corn capital of the world), Mt Vernon IN(Thermoplastics Capital of the US).
In the early years after leaving U of I I was in grain elevator management. During the last 16 years I have been fortunate enough to have traveled extensively overseas. I have made 15-20 trips to Asia(mostly Japan and Taiwan, although less frequently to Thailand, VietNam, and Hong Kong. This was predominantly to call on users of soybeans for soyfoods.
Have gotten to go to Europe 8 times on business and 2 for pleasure. We have visited Normandy Beaches(trying to retr...Expand for more
ace the Band of Brothers) and have made it to Germany on business and to visit the birthplace of my Grandfather Traub near Stuttgardt Germany.
We made our first trips to the undeveloped world within the last year. In September of 2012 I went to Mozambique in South Eastern Africa for a two week trip advising an agricultural college on using the soybean production from their farm to produce soyfoods. I was in Cuamba, a remote village in northern MZ.
In March and April of 2013 Linda and I visited Malawi, right next to Mozambique. We spent 3 weeks there. Again I was a consultant to agri business to aid in grain warehouse management and in the use of the African Commodity Exchange(ACE). We stayed in the capital city of Lilongwe, a city of 750,000 people.
The travel has been great. I have enjoyed the grain business and hope to continue some activity in both the grain business and in the volunteer consulting.
