James's Story

Life SAGA food, foggy walks in the woods, the aroma of sun dried weeds floating in the air on a beautiful October day, are all memories of Academy days gone by. Yet, every now and then a similar event sparks those memories and they come flooding back. I spend what time I can outdoors, as we always did at school. The only thing missing from the old days is an occasional push in the back from Jefferson Bennett Davis, Slouch's giggling, and Pete wondering aloud about "where the hell we are". There's been a lot of water under the bridge since then. I wouldn't trade most of it for anything: a really unique "roll your own" tour in the Navy - stationed in New Orleans! a double major in biology & chemistry from The Univ of North AL - yeah, not the most exquisite institution, but the only NCAA program to ever win three back to back national titles (Div II Football). ost its appeal, but I've been a researcher with UAB ever since - a very interesting and satisfying occupation. I completed an electrical engineering degree at night while doing basic research in protein chemistry. Since then I've had research engineering jobs in vision science, cardiology, and biophysical sciences. The last eight years have been involved with development of unique research instrumentation, most of which has been flown on the space shuttle and space station. We even had a payload on MIR. My daughter Beth will be a senior at Spain Park High here in Hoover - just south of Birmingham. She'll have several choices of colleges. My son Lee seems like he wants to make a carrer as a seventh grader... I'm sure he'll turn it around, just like I did. He's just like me - I'm sure that surprises most of you (and may frighten some). I'd really like to hear from all of you. It's easy to find my contact info since I've been with The Univ of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) for so long. You can try jwayland at uab dot edu.
