Jamie's Story

Life I had a nice run buying radio towers then sold my shares in the business and moved to the French Quarter of New Orleans with my fiancee' Mary. We planned our wedding for last Halloween but Katrina and the Waves flattened our marriage plans along with much of the city. Mary and I personally came through the storm without damage but so many of our friends lost family, friends, and property. I chip around with a little business but most of the time I maintain a historical house. I learned the hard way that when real estate agents say "historical" it means the buyer must constantly fix 150-year-old weak links. After Katrina, we ...Expand for more
tested the integrity of the house's main support beams. I was shocked to learn these beams are held together by wood pegs and hand-forged iron braces instead of simple nails. They tell me it is because the house pre-dates the invention of mass-produced nails. Thankfully, the beams withstood Katrina because even the great McGuckins Hardware doesn't sell replacement wood pegs nor employ blacksmiths. My neighborhood (and the entire city) is a close knit and very diverse community. Much more so than anywhere I've worked or lived. We considered leaving New Orleans after Katrina but we could not think of anywhere more entertaining.
